New P1 - Can't get HDMI port to work

2018-12-21, 15:32 PM

Hello,

Brand new P1 laptop and I cannot get the HDMI port to work when connected to an external monitor (HDMI-to-DisplayPort).  I've scoured the interwebs, from AskJeeves to HotBot, and cannot find an answer that works.  Stuff tried so far:

-Making sure all drivers/BIOS were up to date (they are).

-Multiple cables.

-Making sure that screen extend is on.

-Monitor works.

-Checked the BIOS settings for any clue of port disabling.

-Pressed the reset button on the bottom of the case.

-Used four-letter words.

-Sprayed incense on Jobu.

Now I'm just using one 4K 15.6" laptop screen like some kind of peasant.  Please help!

Can you try it from Linux? When I had problems with my V510 with HDMI Audio, I downloaded Ubuntu and booted it from USB. It worked perfect there so I know it was an issue with Windows 10 and Lenovo compatibility. You can even try it without installing it completely, just use it in test mode. This way you can see if it's a hardware problem or something wrong with BIOS or software compatibility. In my case it was solved by a BIOS update after 9 months.

The NVIDIA virtual audio device is not installed in all probability. Go to Device Manager->Sound controllers and check. If not, then update the display driver for the adapter. The driver should be there now and the HDMI should be working.

I'm also having a similar issue, the external monitor connected to HDMI port is not detected.

I'm using latest driver:
- 25.21.14.1616 (NVIDIA Graphics Driver)
- 24.20.100.6346 (Intel Graphics Driver)

Thanks for the reply, harrisb.

Btw, is it from P70? If yet, it looks different on P1.
Also, I'm having problem with connecting to external monitor (not about HDMI audio).

This is on a P1. Did you update the Thunderbolt firmware?

Yes, I'm using latest Thunderbolt firmware and have verified using Lenovo Vantage (no more new updates).

Btw, I'm using the on-board HDMI 2.0 port (it's located between Thunderbolt and Mini Gigabit Ethernet ports).

I'm gonna try buying a new HDMI cable.

I just tested my HDMI port into a Samsung TV. Display extended properly along with the sound. Perhaps your HDMI cable needs to be updated.

Re: New P1 - Can't get HDMI port to work

Aha .. I managed to enable it!

I need to go to BIOS -> Config -> Display; change "Boot Time Extension" to 1 second (or more).

It mentions: "The system cannot detect some external monitors during boot because they need a few seconds to be ready."

My P1 might need more time to detect the DELL monitor.

Thanks harrisb for checking on your P1. Appreciated it.
