Newest UltraNav driver brakes native windows middle-click scrolling

2012-09-13, 19:36 PM

I just want to report that the newest touchpad driver brakes native windows middle-click scrolling.

What I'm talking is this:

1. Swich off all advanced features in the TouchPoint setting to get back a middle button. BTW, how on earth it is possible that the default setting "steals" the middle button. Going for the Nr. 1. PC maker and forgetting a stupid default settings in a Synaptics driver is a joke.

2. Now, try scrolling in any native windows application like Chrome, Firefox, etc.

The quick way of scrolling is to push the middle button while scrolling. It had always worked before.

Now this way is broken.

Now, the only way for scrolling is to the:

1. push middle button to enter scolling mode

2. move mouse

3. push again to exit scrolling mode

This scolling mode has never been a good way to scroll, but the quick way is broken with the latest driver.

I'm using a W520 with Windows 7, 64-bit. Broken driver: Version 16.2.5.0

Touchpad Now Dysfunctional Thanks to UltraNav Update

2012-09-13, 21:15 PM

I have a similar problem as the OP: after today's update, my Touchpad is not functioning properly anymore. Scrolling of any sort on the Touchpad seems to have been disabled. As I do not have a mouse attached, I am forced to use the Trackpoint set's middle button and then move my cursor around to scroll. I checked my Control Panel settings and both two-finger and single-finger Touchpad scrolling are enabled via the settings.

Also I don't know if this is relevant, but it seems like the option to double-tap to bring up Lenovo SimpleTap has also randomly been disabled...

W530, Windows 7 x64.

Never mind: solved it by manually downloading drivers. I should point out, to anyone who is also updating through Lenovo Solutions Center, that the automatic updates failed to install the UltraNav update appopriately (it said some device had randomly been disconnected after I rebooted for my BIOS update). If you also end up having loss of Trackpoint functionality, I would also recommend that you go check out drivers and download/install them manually.

same for me.

in addition, i never do BIOS updates from within a running Windows session. i always use the bootable CD method, following the instructions explicitly, and i've never had a bricked machine.

cheers.

Re: Newest UltraNav driver brakes native windows middle-click scrolling

Similar problem on X230T.  After ultranav driver update and BIOS update the middle button is not working as before.  I use it mainly to click browser links and have them open in a new tab.  I configured the ultranav not to use the middle button for scrolling but it still does not work.  To verify it was not a broblem with my beowser, I configured one of the tap zones on the trackpad to be the "3rd button" and with this the browser does what I expect.  I want this function back on the middle button as before.

Does anybody from Lenovo read these or do anything?

Re: Newest UltraNav driver brakes native windows middle-click scrolling

Had same problem on X230T w/ Synaptics 16.2.14.0 driver - fixed by changing to 'smooth scrolling' in TrackPoint properties: Start > Control Panel > Mouse > UltraNav > TrackPoint Settings > Scrolling/Magnifying Settings > Scrolling Type = Smooth. Now middle button clicks as usual, and holding the middle button allows me to scroll by moving the trackpoint.

EDIT: Noticed that OP was using 16.2.5 driver. This fix may work for that version also, otherwise, here is link for 16.2.14: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS019164

Lenovo, can you reply something? I'm using this laptop for OpenGL development, and with Lenovo's Ultranav driver, the middle button just doesn't work!

Making it set to "Neither" doesn't function as a real "neither", it function as "middle click implemented as Lenovo's driver decides". I cannot middle-click + TrackPoint drag in my applications! This is not acceptable for a development machine!

OK, to show my problem I've made a very small application for drawing with the mouse. If you click the left button it draws in red, middle = green, right = blue.

This is what happens with Lenovo's driver:

Left and right clicking works while using TrackPoint.

Middle click gets frozen when using TrackPoint!

Here is an image showing how it's impossible to draw using the TrackPoint + middle click:

And here is how it looks when using the TouchPad + middle click:

Middle Button + TrackPoint works perfectly using the latest Synaptics driver from Synaptics.com (16.2.21).

Here is the sample application:

Button Tester (source code included, in case you are afraid of a Virus)

Lenovo, please fix this bug in your TrackPoint driver, and make it function just like it's in Synaptics!

Re: Newest UltraNav driver brakes native windows middle-click scrolling

I had to reinstall Windows on my Thinkpad Edge 11 so now I'm stuck with this new UltraNav version. I experience the same issue - I cannot disable that silly middle click behaviour and return to native Windows middle click as that option is gone from the driver's control panel.

Consequences for me:

  • I have to use the terrible scrolling behaviour of the UltraNav driver
  • I cannot even use the middle button to close tabs in my browser (this annoys me the most)
  • Middle mouse not working in some 3D applications

Will this be fixed? Can you at least provide a previous working version of the driver (I can't remember which one I had before, but I had no issues with it)?

Try to install the old version of the driver: http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/win8beta_8agx63ww.zip

You have to deinstall the broken driver first. Then, you can install the old driver.
