No Bios 1.3 update in Thinkvantage system update tool?

I had bios 1.25

I ran the thinkvangate toolbox and the update system, asking for lenovo updates.  It said there was a bios update, which I ran.

Now I have 1.26.

There are no more updates reported by the updater.

Does anyone know:

1) Is 1.3 a beta product?

2) Is it not in the Lenovo update tool because they are very slow at adding updates (i.e. months late?)

3) Is it safe to install Bios 1.3 manualy?  The only place I can find it is here - is this the correct source?

The reason for wanting the update is that my CPU clock is fixed (wont go down on battery, and wont go up under heavy single core load), and also since installing the new power manager 3.62, the fan is stuck on permanently even on battery, idle and cold and the noise is driving me nuts.  There are no reported fixes in 1.3 for any of these issues, but people are reporting that it may fix them, so I guess the Lenovo developers might have sneaked some undocumented (but hopefully tested) changes in there.

This machine is my livelyhood, so I cant afford on day downtime - so Bios udates are only done if desperatly needed and if no issues are reported.

If it is your livelyhood and you aren't having any issues, I would not recommend updating manually or otherwise. There is a risk you will brick the machine.

Re: No Bios 1.3 update in Thinkvantage system update tool?

You were only running BIOS 1.25? That version had a broken TurboBoost.

Your link is pointing to the correct version of BIOS 1.30. Many have installed it and it is NOT BETA. The updater is sometimes behind several weeks and sometimes drivers don't show up at all if there is no new function to be added or corrected. There is a section of "new drivers" which is the initial repositiory prior to the update system incorporating them. There is one for the AMT that should be installed as well which is also in that section.

The drivers posted in the "Latest Drivers" section of support are NEVER BETA. Why would you believe that?

Re: No Bios 1.3 update in Thinkvantage system update tool?

I was just asking why the drivers were not in the lenovo update tool - I wanted to be sure they were not beta.  The only link I could find to 1.3 did not mention latest drivers. 1.26 did not fix anything.  however, upgrading from 1.26 to 1.30 has fixed the fan AND the locked 2.2 CPU.  All my benchmarks have gone up by > 25%, the fan has finally stopped, the battery life has gone from 2.5h to a whopping 5h, and the CPU throttles down when ilde below 2.2 for the first time since having the machine - the difference is amazing.

So basically after 3 months of effort to find and fix this problem, its done.  Now I have a usable computer.  Now I  only need to get the  FPR working and get a correct ICM profile from someone and I will have a good computer.

Re: No Bios 1.3 update in Thinkvantage system update tool?

TVSU offered me 1.25 for a while. Not sure if they're still in the process of migrating everything over from IBM, but it's sure taking a while.

1.30 works great for me.

Re: No Bios 1.3 update in Thinkvantage system update tool?

I purchased a new W520 earlier this week.  The 1.30 BIOS update was made public two days after the machine arrived (in other words, about 3 days ago).  I downloaded and installed it, and my W520 works just fine.

Concerning ThinkVantage System Update (TVSU), over the years I have learned that this is a very useful tool, but it is not always 100% comprehensive.  Sometimes, new stuff does not show up in TVSU right away.  What I usually do is run TVSU first - that will typically catch about 90% or more of the available updates - then I will go have a look at the Device Driver File Matrix (DDFM) for the computer and see if there is anything that "looks new" there.  By "looks new", I mean anything that has been posted in the previous 30 days.  Occasionally, I will see things in the DDFM that don't show up on TVSU.

Another useful link to have handy is the direct link to the ThinkVantage Technologies download page.  This page shows all of the various Lenovo applications such as Rescue & Recovery, Access Connections, and stuff like that that is not necessarily specific to one certain model of ThinkPad.  Many, but not all of those applications will also appear in the 'ThinkVantage Technologies' section of the model-specific DDFM.

So, in short, if you want to cover all the bases and be totally up to date:

1) Run TVSU

2) Visit the DDFM and look for new stuff

3) Visit the ThinkVantage Technologies download page and look for new stuff.

Be aware that it appears that TVSU has taken the Labour Day weekend off Smiley Happy - it has not been working for me since Friday morning, and I notice that there are a lot of posts in the ThinkVantage Technologies forum stating that it is not working properly at this time.  TVSU seems to go offline for a few days once or twice a year - it must be a very clever application because it always packs it in on the Friday afternoon before a long weekend.  Once the Lenovo staff get back to work next Tuesday, it will probably be up and running again before lunchtime Tuesday.

Michael

PS: If you go to the Device Driver File Matrix (DDFM) for the W520 today (Sept 3 2011), you will see that the most recent BIOS for the W520 listed in the summary table is 1.26, but if you actually click on that link for 1.26, you will be presented with the download page for 1.30.  I guess whoever updated the download target (the actual new 1.30 BIOS package) forgot to go and update the number in the summary table.

Re: No Bios 1.3 update in Thinkvantage system update tool?

The Device Driver File Matrix has been unreliable for some time. The only true compilation of files, drivers and OS fixes are to be found in the drivers and download section for the specific MT/model (as cumbersome as that may be). If one runs the AutoDetect program and then looks at the resultant files, one will see all the relevant files for that MT and OS combination.

The TVSU sometimes does not call out updates to a specific system if the scripts that it runs do not consider the update to be significant in function/feature to be applied. As an example, the AMT firmware update has been available for over 3 weeks now, but the TVSU has never offered it for my system (4270CTO).

It used to be that TVSU and the DDFM were always in synch, rarely different in execution for more than a couple of days. Now, the support page continues with the disclaimer that things are not up to date, but it is work in progress.
