No digital audio in or out, or the ability to record digital audio in W700 and W500 series notebooks

2009-03-01, 0:00 AM

I purchased a W700 back in November and spent $450 extra for a BluRay drive. You must use the DisplayPort to connect HDMI compliant gear and I have also learned that they have failed to include audio over the DisplayPort which really makes paying for BluRay a waste of money. They fail to mention this on their website so buyer beware! There does not seem to be any way of outputting the multi-channel digital soundtracks of any DVD or BluRay unless I purchase a mini-dock and haul that around with me everywhere I go. Many notebooks use the headphone jack as an optional digital out port, but not on the W series. They have even crippled the internal "record what you hear" digital audio recording feature common in even the cheapest notebooks.

This is a problem is you ever plan on editing video, recording audio of any kind, playing back movies, or hooking the notebook up to a home theater or to office presentation gear like projectors.

When will Lenovo deal with this problem?

Never...

I've edit videos with Premiere and After Effects with no problems on the audio side though. Of course, you won't get digital audio out.

I've been waiting for an update on the broken wacom drivers to support 2 buttons (indispensable for pro 3D applications) since I purchased my W700 back in October 2008. Wacom developers sent a new driver to Lenovo back in early December but Lenovo seems to keep that driver in the dark for some reason. I guess we just bought the wrong laptop.

It can be accomplished with clumsy peripherals, but Lenovo should have fixed these problems by now. ~Wes

I am using kubuntu 9.04, and it detects a spdif output on my w500. I am currently trying to find a way to test this to see if it works (I do not have any thing that I can output digital audio too right now).  if it does work then the port must be shut off in software in windows and should be an easy fix.

It does work-- on the motherboard chipset-- but they have gimped the outputs to prevent you from accessing spdif out unless you purchase and lug around a mini-dock ($275, 6lbs.). Nice eh? They have also failed to follow Inetl's reccommended spec for audio pass-through over the Displayport-- so that will never work either-- making hookup to TV's or presentation projectors an extra pain.

I spent $450 extra for a Blu-ray drive I can't connect to anything without the minidock-- which I bought.

I wonder why they still call these notebooks workstations?

They won't say and they have been asked many times. Compliance with the wishes of DRM obsessed organizations like the RIAA, MPAA? To save 41 cents per machine when manufacturing them? Becasue they thought professionals wouldn't care? To sell more mini-docks? Or just sloppy management? We may never know but I'll bet you they quietly add this back in to future product releases.

They also decided to gimp DisplayPort which they obviously choose to use in lieu of HDMI-- both are supposed to carry video AND audio-- but they gimped that port too, making purchase of their Blu-ray option a real waste of money ($450 Blu-ray + $275 for minidock with SPDIF out only).

I wish Lenovo would explain this and tell us what they intend to do about it in the future. I don't think they understand how many high-end sales this is costing them.

Company rarely explains their train of thoughts or motivation in fear of leaking something to the competition to pick up or use them as a weapon of attack in their marketing. Regarding, displayport implementation, it was used to as a simple high resolution solution for people using the next generation display.... i.e. Apple have implementated displayport mini on their line of LCD so has Dell's top selling 24 inch LCD. And many laptop of the same generation released by their competitors that has displayport don't really carry audio either.

Regarding, cost cutting as the main reason for not implementing HDMI or audio on displayport is not correct. Considering that Lenovo offers HDMI on their cheapest thinkpad SL series and on their ideapad, so what you stated is not correct as a motive.

Thinkpads were had never included extra audio ports with digital signal other than spdif, while some competitors whom used to offer high quality audio output have phased them apart from Apple, but than again Apple have lot more say on these issues then its competitors. Considering how much money they pull in for the music industry with their online itune store.
