No laptop display after Windows 10 Anniversary Update

2016-08-25, 15:33 PM

I just got a new P50 with 1920x1080 IPS display, Samsung nvme 512 SSD, and M100M graphics.

I noticed that after setup its only Windows 10 ver 1511(10586.545) instead of the latest 1607(14393.82), I have the new release working great on my current W530 so I decieded to update, HUGE MISTAKE.

So basically after the update the Lenovo logo appears as usual and then it boots to windows but there is no display on the laptop, I can see HDD activity and keyboard lights so I know its still working. I decided to plug in an external mini DP display and I was able to see my screen finally but nothing on the LCD.

Has anyone else experienced this? Looking for some help.

Re: No laptop display after Windows 10 Anniversary Update

I have had this same experience with my dual-boot  P70 -- but seems more prevalent (though fortunately somewhat rare) with Windows 7 -- perhaps because I use it 95% of the time, instead of Win10.  I only use discreet graphics and have a Quadro M4000 installed. Are you using discreet graphics, hybid or just the integral Intel GPU?

By connecting via Windows Remote Desktop Connection to the affected machine, I have confirmed that everything seems to be operating properly, except that the display on laptop is blank.

My best guess is that there is some kind of driver issue, although hardware compatibility cannot be ruled-out.  Anecdotally, this phenomenon seems more likely when I boot the machine but do not touch it for a while -- might also be associated with machine not coming-out of a screen-blanked state in Windows.  It doesn't happen frequently enough to really detect any other pattern.

With Anniversary Edition, all kinds of settings seem to be altered, irrespective of their prior state.  I'd suggest that you make certain FAST BOOT is switched-off as that one setting seems very problematic for ThinkPads.

Thanks for the reply, with regard to FAST BOOT, are you talking about - Power options > system settings > shutdown settings > turn off fast startup?

Yes, that's a prime culprit.

You might also update to the latest ThinkPad Power Manager Driver as well and make sure Anniversary  Edition hasn't turned-on Airplane mode, especially if your machine suddenly stops charging while plugged-in.

These are some of the reasons that (otherwise sophisticated, sane people) prefer Apple products.  In fairness, since Apple controls the entire hardware/software ecosystem, it is much easier to ensure that updates are less likely to cause harm.  In the Wintel hegemony, the responsibility is distributed between Microsoft and thousands of hardware vendors (each embodying their individual engineering perspectives and designs).

Ah well, I sometimes need to just blow off some steam.....

I don't think MS could ever piss me off enough to switch to Apple, that thought is unbearable to me.

No luck with fast boot disabled.

While connected to an external display when I check Nvidia options the laptop display is not even detected by the system.

to shed a little more light on this topic, looks like after the anniversarry update of windows 10, the intel Graphics 530 is experiencing an error "windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (code 43).

I've attempted to uninstall and use the intel update utility to pull down the latest drivers with no luck, attempted the beta driver as well available here. :smileyfrustrated:

I'm having the same issue. With no resolution yet. Have tried the latest BIOS and display drivers. Only thing that works is rolling back to the older build.  I'm seeing this on an X1 Carbon 2015 (intel 5500 graphics, I think that's what it was) and X1 Yoga with (intel 520 graphics). I've many more Lenovos out there so very concerned about this happening on other computers.

I agree, for now the only resolution is to roll back to previous version or use a dekstop monitor/keyboard and mouse, not much of a laptop at that point lol.

I hope MS will create some new Intel 530 drivers soon.

Let me know if you have any luck @Craig503

There's been a report that turning off secure boot may be a temporary work-around.

My machines haven't had this issue so I can't say one way or the other.  Feedback welcome.
