P1 - Thunderbolt Controller Driver not recognize to the station after updating

2018-10-10, 21:15 PM

Hello,

I was trying to update my P1 Thunderbolt driver earlier today, in order to get my eGPU in work. After I restart, the eGPU just not able to connect to my machine. I've properly install the TB software, but when I want to perform a firmware update again, it shows the TB device is not installed. I've tried various BIOS settings for that but non of them works. I've tried several times of reinstall and uninstall the software with different versions, it just dont' work.

Then, I opened the Version of the Controller Software, as the pic showed here, it shows unknown. SO does the firmware update detect, It showed as pic 2. I assume it's due to a corrupted drive of the controller, or it's broken. But I cant find any way to recover the controller driver version. Is it only happend on my machine?

Finaly my issue on my new P1 is resolved. Got a MB swap by lenovo technician. Now everything works as it should. So many days wasted, but now it works perfectly.

I have this same issue with a new X1 Extreme.  I was notified that Lenovo had a new BIOS and Firmware that needed to be run.  I ran the firmware and it was fine.  After BIOS 1.18 I rebooted and my Thunderbolt 3 workstation dock no longer displays video to my two monitors.  The Thunderbolt controller is unknown from the Thunderbolt app, but is seen fine in Windows 10 1809.  I would rather not replace the motherboard on a computer that is less than 1 month old.

I have the same issue. After FIRMEWARE update, no longer see thunderbolt docking. How is this going to get fixed. Power button, newwork cable, mouse doe not work. This is really bad. Can not use my second MONITOR. Again, how can this be fixed if PC does not see Thunderbolt dock? Need answer.

Is replacing the ONLY solution? Who is going to let us know if this is the required fix? LENOVO - what is the answer.

Hard to say what exactly caused this issue, in my case i think BIOS update or the fact that i changed some bios settings that I've read ruins the controller. So after i got a new MB i refuse to update BIOS. They really need to fix this issue...

I was able to fix this.  The controller unknow is directly related to Thunderbolt FIRMWARE.  Download the thunderbolt firmware update and have it ready to run before you start.  This is what I did:

1.  Unplug anything thunderbolt

2. Uninstall the thunderbolt software

3. Quickly shutdown following the software uninstall (if you don't it will reinstall itself)

4. Plug in only standard power still nothing plugged into thunderbolt ports

5. Turn on your laptop

6.  At this point I tried to quickly reinstall the thunderbolt software, but it had already reinstalled itself.

7. I then ran the firmware update that I had previously downloaded from the website.  It actually completed this time.  After the reboot everything worked again.

I have a X1 Extreme, basically the same as a P1.

Which Thunderbolt firmware did you install please, for the system or the workstation dock? What I think you and TedC99 describe may be slightly different to that experienced by jtowse and perhaps also Knorren; there is a parallel discussion on the Thunderbolt Workstation Dock firmware causing an issue.

Hi Andy_Lenovo,

This is not a dock firmware issue.  Once I updated the thunderbolt firmware specifically for the controller on the laptop it started working again. The file is n2eti04w.exe, NVM36.00 that I used to update my laptop.  After I was able to get it to update and restart my monitors started working again and the controller was no longer unknown.

Thanks
