P50 Additional RAM

2016-12-14, 20:47 PM

Hello,

Getting a P50 delivered tomorrow (no Xeon). The unit has 8GB RAM and I was looking to replace that and also get 8GB for another laptop.

Hence was thinking of moving the 8GB from P50 to this other unit and get new RAM for P50.It seems that it is more cost effective to get 16GBx2 ($165) than to get 8GBx2 ($90).

Plus once I get 16GBx2 installed under the keyboard, I'm done with ever opening it to upgrade RAM and will get dual channel benefits.

Looking at some other posts, they suggest to wait till I get the P50, see the specs of RAM (CAS, latency etc) and then order replacement RAM. I thought as long as I get DDR4-2133 260-pin, I should be good to go (non-ECC RAM).

Is that not correct?

Was looking to get Crucial since some other brands seemed to have had issues with P50, but can go with cheaper alternative if they work. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

My experience is with a P70, but that should be the same.  I put in 2 sets (64GB) Patriot Memory PSD432G2133K which work fine.

Thanks.

That is what I was thinking that as long as RAM is DDR4-2133 sodimm, that should work.

Of course, now looking at prices, Crucial seems to be the lowest price unit.
