P50 -- Impossible to update Thunderbolt Firmware - "Not running the latest BIOS"

2018-10-26, 16:45 PM

Hi,

UEFI is at the latest Downloadable version but the much older Thunderbolt Firmware from 2017 says the BIOS is not up to date.

Why isn't there a working Thunderbolt Firmware Flash tool ... it probably does the version check wrong.

Theoretically one could try with a old BIOS, but the Update text states that it is not possible to go below 1.44.

Intel Alpine Ridge Thunderbolt Firmware for Windows 10 (64-bit), 8.1 (64-bit), 7 (64-bit) - ThinkPad P50  -- v25
This was released on 09 May 2017, so the BIOS at this Time was either 1.39 or 1.40.

The following versions of UEFI BIOS and ECP (Embedded Controller Program) have
  been released to date.

Thunderbolt Software is installed ( https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n1ete11w.exe ).

README of the driver : https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n1ete11w.txt

Firmware Update:

There is no activity log, however doing this from an elevated administrator cmd:

C:\DRIVERS\WIN\ThunderboltFW>FwUpdateTool.exe
PM Driver version is OK. BIOS is not ready!
Please update BIOS to the latest one

The README for the fw update states:

https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n1etf08w.txt

To update the Thunderbolt firmware, ThinkPad P50 system BIOS is updated to N1EET67W(v1.40) or later, and Power Management driver is updated to v1.67.12.19 or later.

This update stuff sucks!

Finally got it working, either there is a network component and lenovo changed something the update tool might contact or the process is totally fubar.

Maybe it helps someone ...  the steps are not different than the 10 tries before though.

Installed other Power Management Drivers suggested by lenovo update.

Removed Thunderbolt Software

Installed older Thunderbolt Software from intel download TBT_Win7_8.1_64_16.2.55.275.zip

Tried ... BIOS not ready ... update not working

Removed Thunderbolt Software

Installed Thunderbolt Software from Lenovo again, Version 17.3.74.400

Tried .... not working

Rebootet

Tried ... suddenly working

C:\DRIVERS\WIN\ThunderboltFW>FwUpdateTool.exe
PM Driver version is OK.
The interface is checked and the BIOS supports the interface.
The TBT_PWR is checked and the BIOS supports the function.
Wait 7 seconds to force Thunderbolt device to be power on...

Tried a lot of other stuff in between, like using the Intel NUC thunderbolt update and such.

Really, this is serious **bleep**ty updating.

Also seems that the Controller is not always present ... at least not powered up asap after login.

This helped me too

Great that you got it working!
I think we can all agree this thunderbolt fiasco across multiple products is not looking good. Intel does not seem committed to support older chip-sets, provide faulty firmware, produce a rather useless product that is not always visible in device manager.
There seems to be both design and implementation quality problems. Lenovo also needs to step up to the plate here.
