P50 NVMe Firmware for Samsung 960 1TB MZVKW1T0HMLH

2018-10-19, 7:22 AM

Hello,

I bought my P50 in October 2016. It has a SAMSUNG 961 OEM NVMe SSD (SAMSUNG MZVKW1T0HMLH-0000). The Firmware version is CXA7100Q (the drive shipped with this firmware).

Since a few weeks I'm experiencing slow performance issues (Windows 10 Pro, 1803). Reinstalling didn't help. There have been some throttling issues as well which is a known bug of the firmware my drive has:https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/samsung-sm961-ssd,4608-5.html. This issue has been resolved in a later firmware version.

There are newer firmware versions out (the latest at the time of this writing seems to be 7L6QCXA7) but the P50 NVMe Firmware update utility does not include this firmware for the 1 TB version of this drive (only for models up to 512 MB).

Is there any way to obtain the latest firmware for the 1TB version/are there any plans to include the 1 TB model firmware in one of the upcoming FWNVxx firmware update utility versions for the P50 model?

Regards,

Marcel

Hello,

I did some asking around, and some people were wondering if this was the SSD that originally shipped with the system from Lenovo.

From looking at the ThinkPad P50 FRU-BOM (Field-Replaceable Unit-Build of Materials, aka the parts list), it looks like the ThinkPad P50 was only offered with 256GB and 512GB NVMe SSDs, and not 1TB NVMe SSDs.

This appears to be a a Samsung SM961 PCIe SSD, which is an OEM drive used by many manufacturers.  You may want to try downloading the Samsung Magician software, and seeing if it can identify if a firmware update is available.

It could be that the drive was originally meant to be used with another vendor, such as Asus, Dell, Hewlett-Packard and so forth.  If it turns out that is the case, you may have to use the specific firmware update utility they provide, as opposed to the firmware update utility from Lenovo or Samsung.

Hello,

I bought my P50 from an official Lenovo reseller with this configuration. The Samsung Magician software does not support this drive because it is an OEM drive and Samsung states that one should get the firmware from the manufacturer that shipped this OEM drive in his hardware - i.e. Lenovo.

I have also contacted the reseller and the shop told me to get in touch with Lenovo because it is an OEM drive.

Regards,

M.

Same here, we got a couple of 1TB 961s from Lenovo's web shop on a P70. In this case they are MZSLW1T0HMLH-000L1 and Lenovo firmwares, so far, have been available only for capacities up to 512GB.

Hello,

Can you tell me the model number (not the serial number) for your ThinkPad P50?  It should be something like 20EN- or 20EQ-1234US.  I will then be able to do some more research and see what I can find out.

yes, this is correct, PM961 1TB you have is applicable to P70, but not SM961 the OP has in P50. L1 symbols in the fw index means the SSD has Lenovo branded fw version, not manufacturer' generic one.

Yes, that's right x220.

My question is aimed at the fact that sewveral new firmwares have been released for smaller sizes but not for the 1TB ones.

Anyhow the MTM is 20ERCTO1WW and the M.2 FRU 00UP414.
