Re: P50/P70 Thunderbolt 3 External GPU

No, I did not get the chance to run any benchmarks, I messed with CAD for about 30 min to check stability there were no issues.

Re: P50/P70 Thunderbolt 3 External GPU

What interests me about your testing is the comment about hot-plugging in the Thunderbolt 3 ports. I have the same trap when I unplug my RAID array that connects through a USB-3/Thunderbolt 2 (thank you Apple for making cheap adapers!) adapter.

Something ain't right about the drivers/ports.

Re: P50/P70 Thunderbolt 3 External GPU

great news! This has made my decision not to wait for Pascal Quadros a done deal.
Maxwell P50 where I come!
The external display limitation is reasonable. in fact, crowding thunderbolt 3 bandwith with two-way data traffic seems inefficient.
Any chance you can try a Pascal GeForce? my point is would the new GPUs hit the bottleneck of the Thunderbolt 3 so that they became as good (or bad) as Maxwell 9-series?

Re: P50/P70 Thunderbolt 3 External GPU

I don't have acess to a 1080 but I have no reason to think it will perform poorly.

Re: P50/P70 Thunderbolt 3 External GPU

thanks. just order a second P50 (I had to part ways with a previous one). knowing the core works gave me the perfect excuse to try again knowing that in a way, long-term obsolence is shielded from being able to "upgrade" graphics externally (hopefully the Core will come down in price later).

In retrospect, I guess the P40, P50s are the ones that if they had a thunderbolt 3 port, woudl benefit the most. also, it occurs to me that if an eGPU solution were to mode widespread, then maybe there is little case for the P70. As you could get same CPU, memory and disk arrays in a P50, and just plug in an external monitor for when heavy using graphics.

Re: P50/P70 Thunderbolt 3 External GPU

@franklima260

I see eGPU is not supported for P50 under details section of the TH3 software.

I wonder if eGPU support is disabled at recent P50 BIOS/TH3 firmware Or you could simply get the  Razer Core to work despite eGPU not being supported with P50!

There is a chance your TH3 software is upgraded when you connected your P50 to the  Razer Core.  Would you please take a screenshot of details section of your TH3 software and share it with us?  Thanks!

Re: P50/P70 Thunderbolt 3 External GPU

Any update on this?

I am seriously considering whether I should replace my W520 and EXP GDC setup with a P50 and Akitio Thunderbolt 3 Enclosure.  (Note: I currently reside in China where the two month shipping on the Razer Core in addition to a much higher price than the Akitio is a dealbreaker for me.)

OR

I should just give up the whole EGPU experience and build a desktop.

(Note: nVidia appears to be killing EGPU connections over ExpressCard/M.2/Mini PCI-E with driver updates AFTER 372.90.  I am currently stuck on 372.90 because of this.  Many EGPU users with the 10X0 series are also reporting the dreaded Error 43)

Re: P50/P70 Thunderbolt 3 External GPU

None of those details seem to show up on my Thunderbolt Config.

As far whether or not these setting will break the eGPU support I do not think so. I think that primarly pertains to the hotpluging of the GPU that we know does not work curently.

If y'all think eGPUs should be supported by Lenovo (as I do) tweet Lane the Product Manager for the Thinkpad Line

Re: P50/P70 Thunderbolt 3 External GPU

This is great! I wonder why Lenovo folks are not paying attention to this thread, it seems arbitrary to me to restrict TB3 drivers to not support eGPUs
