P50 - Windows 10 clean installation to Samsung 970 Pro NVMe M.2 SSD fails

2019-12-15, 10:53 AM

Has anyone successfully installed Windows 10 x64 Pro to Samsung 970 Pro NVMe M.2 SSD?

I have now tried this for few days, the installation fails to that point where you select partition, the installer sees the disk, but when creating partitions there are lots of different errors.

-Bios is up to date v1.59, reset to defaults, and sees the hard drive model correctly

-BIOS settings: UEFI Only and Secure Boot enabled, with RUFUS media Secure Boot disabled

-Have tried hard drive slot 0 and 1

-All other USB sticks etc. and hard drives are disconnected

Media is USB Windows 10 x64 Pro (build 1909), created by Windows Media Creation Tool and also created media with RUFUS.

-Have tried USB2 and USB3 sticks, few different models, to different ports

I have deleted partitions inside the Windows installer and used also DISKPART tool to clean the disk, and also convert it GPT.

I have read several topics and tested almost every scenario there is, but can not install Windows to this drive.

Hi,

It might help a bit to know what the errors were.

This is something I know nothing about, but was the machine originally set up in RAID mode?  Is there a RAID option in the BIOS config tab?

RAID option is disabled. Attached error pictures to first post. Seems like the installer can not create partitions correctly.

This is pretty off-the-wall but some chatter on the interwebs say that the error is actually referring to your install media since for some reason the installer is attempting to modify it.

The work-around is making sure your install media isn't listed as the 1st bootable device.  Are you booting by setting the flash driive at the top of the boot list, or selecting it on the fly via the boot menu?

Not sure I believe what I've read, but it would be easy enough to test.

I have created the media to USB2 and USB3 sticks, several times with Windows 10 media creation tool and RUFUS, to ensure that there are no errors in media creation, also tested few different USB stick manufactures. Also tried the USB stick with different ports.

Have tried to change boot order in BIOS that the drive is first, and the USB is first, but this has no affect.

Also disabled internal media card reader and smart card reader from BIOS to test that maybe that will have some affect to this, but no.

Did you download Windows 10 from the Microsoft website, or are you using a retail package?

Some retail packages may have been sitting on a retailer's shelf for a long time, and may not include the proper drivers for NVME storage. Downloading from Microsoft should resolve this.

First post: Media is USB Windows 10 x64 Pro (build 1909).

Build 1909 is latest what you can get, and it is downloaded from Microsoft.

This is a puzzler :(  A couple of things you could try, although I would't expect them to produce different results.  Maybe....

Use locally-created media: With your old drive in place, type "recovery drive" in the task bar tool box.

Use Lenovo media:  https://support.lenovo.com/sk/sk/solutions/ht103653?LinkTrack=Solr

You could try if a Linux install is able to create partitions.
It might give some insight.

Not on a 970 Pro, but I've done it on a PM981 (the OEM version of the 970 Pro) almost three years back, which is why the steps are a bit fuzzy to recall. I seem to remember though that I had to format my NVME drive first to be able to create the partitions. Have you tried formatting your 970 Pro? I don't recall encoutering the same issues you are having though.
