P50: Xeon E3-1535M v5 or Xeon E3-1550M v5?

Hi,

Xeon E3-1535M v5 or Xeon E3-1550M v5?

Which processor would you recommend?

A shop told me, that E3-1535M v5 is no longer available by Lenovo and that Xeon E3-1550M v5 would be the best. Is this true?

Thanks for any advice!

Re: P50: Xeon E3-1535M v5 or Xeon E3-1550M v5?

Saw your other post asking about optical drive.

I got a feeling that it's either a joke or scam.

1) There's no optical drive option for P50 (of course we are talking about built-in drive, not the external one).

2) There's no E3-1550M v5 option for P50.  In fact, even the E3-1535M has limited availability.  e.g. E3-1535M is available in Japan but not in US.

Good luck with the 'special built' P50.  Smiley Happy

Re: P50: Xeon E3-1535M v5 or Xeon E3-1550M v5?

I checked with the product manager for the P series and wanted to pass along the following information:

  • Lenovo does not offer the 1545 or 1575 on P50. This is because both of these CPUs are paired with the Iris Pro graphics which requires a different thermal assembly than Lenovo designed for the ThinkPad P50.
  • While those CPUs are slightly faster (0.1GHz) than the CPUs paired with Iris graphics (P530), the trade-off to accommodate the bigger TDP didn’t make sense as the vast majority of Lenovo customers ask for discrete graphics and really don’t want/use the Intel integrated graphics in the first place.
  • The 1535 is available in the US, but it’s not showing on the US website for Lenovo.com.  The product manager has sent a note to that team to get that CPU posted on the site so customers can build with it. Rather than wait, feel free to call in and work directly with a Lenovo representative to spec out a 1535 system. In the US you can reach Lenovo sales for ThinkPad Mobile Workstations at 1-855-253-6686.
  • At this time, the Xeon 1535 processor is only available in EMEA. (Edit: 9/1/16)

I hope this information assists you with your purchasing decision.

Thank you,

DAVader - Did you get the 1535 as an option when ordering? It is a bit annoying to see this version lacking on the US builds.

Re: P50: Xeon E3-1535M v5 or Xeon E3-1550M v5?

My P50 is a corporate computer.

My company's standard corporate P50 configuration includes a Core I7 only, not a Xeon CPU.

That's why I was surprised when I saw the Xeon sticker and, therefore, ran Sistem Information to check how the system was configured. I was even more surprised when I saw that the included Xeon was the E3-1535M. Probably, they were still available at the precise moment the batch that included my machine was ordered. I didn't complain, though.

As I said, I just got lucky.

At this point, I would wait for the P51/P71 which should have kaby lake CPU's, if they're not already available.

Lucky you - Enjoy!

Will wait now to see what the next iteration brings around.
