P50 rear thunderbolt port (usb-c)

Is it possible to use this port as a simple USB 3.0 port ... no Thunderbolt?

USB-C to USB-3.0 adapters are readily available, and this would provide an extra (3rd) rear USB port; useful when the dock isn't there and extra USB ports wanted.

Re: P50 rear thunderbolt port (usb-c)

That should work - if a port supports TB3 it should support display-port and usb 3.1 aswell. So if the adapter manages to convert usb3.1 to usb3.0 everything should be fine.

USB-C just describes the formfactor, not the data transfer possibilities.

Re: P50 rear thunderbolt port (usb-c)

thanks ... new laptop and several new ports

the eBay from China adapter states 3.1 to 3.0 ... and the Thunderbolt site TB3 specs lead one to assume it'll be compatable.

have to wait for the postman now...

brgds

Re: P50 rear thunderbolt port (usb-c)

Got a USB-C to USB-3.0 adapter (USD 5~10 on ebay and at shops in asia) ... one end is a male USB-C plug to connect to the P50 Thunderbolt port, and the other end a USB-3.0 female plug for USB cable connection.

The P50 Thunderbolt port (USB-C style) works directly as a normal USB-3.0 port.  For example; my phone is recognized as a storage device, and it charges as well.

So one extra rear USB port gained.

Re: P50 rear thunderbolt port (usb-c)

For anyone else reading this, you can actually buy a USB-C to USB 3.0 adapter hub, with 2-4 USB 3.0 ports. If you really want more connectivity, this is the way to go.

Re: P50 rear thunderbolt port (usb-c)

If you want to plug multiple external HDD's into such a hub, _make sure_ that it is a powered hub, with at least 725mA (optimally the full USB3-type A rated power of 900mA) per port!
