P51 2104: Detection error on SSD1 (M.2)

2018-05-27, 17:30 PM
My P51 was bought with 500GB hard disk and I replaced it with Samsung PM961 1TB M.2 NVMe SSD. Windows 10 was installed on the SSD and all ran well. Then my P51 began to have this intermittent 2104 errors. Sometimes, I left the laptop running and hours later, the screen is showing the error message as shown in the attached picture. If I press ESC, then I cannot see the PM961 ssd either in the boot manu or in the Lenovo page through the App manu. In summary, the PM961 ssd just disappeared. I have to give the P51 a cold start and all will be running fine. Things I tried: 1. Keep BIOS updated. Now it is latest version (N1UET47W 1.21). 2. Re-install/seat the SSD on different slots. This 2104 error just keeps coming back randomly once per 1-2 weeks, which is really frustrating. I will appreciate any suggestion or comment on this.

hello @Cluo

it seems it's a seating issue, check this POST

you have to turn off the machine, remove the SSd and install it back

Thanks for your reply @AM_Y520.
Re-seating is the first thing I did with different slot. I re-installed the ssd again this afternoon. I also checked the POST your mentioned. I have to say if the seating is the problem, something must be wrong about the P51 design. I pushed the SSD all the way in and put the screw on. Not sure if anything else I should check about seating. Another thing is that the 2104 error on my P51 is intermittent: all work well most of the time and all of sudden, the system cannot detect the SSD and throws the error.

did you check the contacts of the SSD if they are, let's say, DIRTY ?? because the 2104 is a hardware error ..
please try to clean the slot by a soft brush and wipe the SSD contacts with a soft tissue .. be gentle !!

I know that this may sounds silly but dust and moisture are responsible for lot of hardware connectivity sometimes ..

I doubt that the DIRTY contact will be the root cause. But I will do a thorough clean and re-install the SSD this weekend. Wish me good luck.

Hi,

Firmware update for Samsung PM961 is available in Lenovo download server;

https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds119265

I'm not sure but why don't you try it if you have not yet tried?

Thank you.
