P52 - ELAN firmware update

Support page advertises a new firmware update for ELAN firmware, version 3, dated 18/6/2019.

The accompanying README reads:

WHAT THIS PACKAGE DOES

This package installs the firmware of the following device

Device name Device name in the Device Manager
  ----------------------- ---------------------------------
Elan Pointing Device Elan Pointing Device

This program is language independent and can be used with any language system.

Still, I cannot find this device in Device Manager.

The only relevant entries are:

  1. Human Interface Devices > ELAN Miniport PTP Driver
  2. Mice and other pointing devices > ELAN Input Device for WDF
  3. Software components > ELAN Touchpad Component
  4. System Devices > ELAN SMBus Driver

Is someting misplaced/mis-installed in my system ? Any other reason for the missing device ?

Re: P52 - ELAN firmware update

Why are you looking in Device Manager ?  Just install the firmware update.

Re: P52 - ELAN firmware update

Once again, why are you looking in Dev Manager ?  This is FIRMWARE update. Not a device driver update.

Simply run the executable and it will update the firmware in the trackpad.

Re: P52 - ELAN firmware update

Once again, read the op.

The attached README (by Lenovo) gives instructions, that do not correspond to what can be seen in the actual system.

It is expected that official documentation is reliable and helpful.

Especially when, there are so many long-lasting problems (incl. ELAN, ME, BIOS, usb ports etc.) that do not get reliably and timely resolved.

I see that you are around this forum for ten years with hundreds of posts, which looks like a strange hobby. The average user would much prefer to never have a reason to visit this forums, or get a solution for his/her problems (on-time) and go do something better.

Re: P52 - ELAN firmware update

I answered the post because I have a P52 and installed that exact firmware update.  Firmware updates FIRST VERIFY that the correct hardware is installed.

If your only concern is that the README says that the "Name is Device Manager" lists as "Elan Pointing Device", well, you're being a bit picky. The device appears in 4 categories as you state.  The README doesn't need to go into that precise detail.

It is a firmware update and going into Dev Mgmt is not nescessary.

In terms of your personal attack on me, I've been using ThinkPads since the very first units from IBM. I answer posts which I think will help people because I've been in this business since 1981, aka DOS 1.0. I keep my comments direct and professional unlike your comments to me. I would suggest that if you want help from people who know more than you, be nice.
