P52 SATA SSD in M.2 Slot

I got my ThinkPad P52 today, and when I tried to install my Crucial MX300 SSD in one of the M.2 slots it didn't detect. The 2.5" drive bay doesn't have any SATA + Power connectors so using an adapter won't solve it either, so I'm wondering if the M.2 slots can run in SATA mode and if so how do I enable it?

It solved itself. Rebooted a couple times due to updates and suddenly it showed up.

Re: P52 SATA SSD in M.2 Slot

Hi Ravesb0ss,

I had ordered a P52 during the BlackFriday and will face the same doubt about whether the P52 can accept M.2 SATA SSD or not.

Is your MX 300 SSD the same as the picture attached below?

Thanks!

Yes, it looks basically identical. I have the 1TB version, but I doubt that drive capacity would make a difference.

Re: P52 SATA SSD in M.2 Slot

Thanks Ravesb0ss!

I don't think the volumn size will make any difference.

What I am worried about is the P52  has key M slots while the M.2 SATA SSD disk is key M+B.

Now based on your trial, it seems like the P52 M.2 slot support both M.2 SATA and M.2 NVMe.

Re: P52 SATA SSD in M.2 Slot

I had sent a message to a lenovo staff asking the same question and the answer just arrived as "the P52 should be able to support an M.2 SATA drive."

Btw, the M.2 slot of P51 support both M.2 SATA and M.2 NVMe drive.

Re: P52 SATA SSD in M.2 Slot

New update....

The P51 and P1 workstations can support both M.2 NVMe and M.2 SATA SSD.

Now it is obvious that the P series workstation can support both M.2 SSD.

The link for P51 in the forum.

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile/Does-P51-support-M-2-SATA-SSD/td-p/36710...

The link for P1 workstation in which a Sumsang 970 EVO (M.2 NVMe) SSD and a WD blue 3D Nano SATA SSD were successfully installed.

The article is in Chinese, so I attach the picture of SSD installation.

Re: P52 SATA SSD in M.2 Slot

In attempting to install SSD in the M.2 slot of my P52 I encountered a screw without a head.  It is a hollow column with threads on the outside.  Does your machine have the same thing, and how did you get it out and back in?

Re: P52 SATA SSD in M.2 Slot

Correction.  It is so small I couldn't see it clearly.  I took a picture with a macro lens and see it is a threaded receptacle in need of a screw.  The little screws I have laying around to mount hard disks are too big.  I read that the P52 comes with screws but it does not.

You need an M2x3mm (or 2.5mm) screw.  They cost ~ as much as singletons as they do in bulk.  I ended up buying the below.  Not sure what I'll do with the other 23....
