Thank you very much indeed. Guess I need to wait a little longer then, until it is available.
Please allow me to ask you one further question: if I am correct you say that you have ordered a P52(?)
whilst in the signature you state you are a X1 Yoga owner.
Out of curiosity - what made you decide to purchase a P52 ?
Over, the highly praised (but regretfully not -yet- available in 15.6") X1 Carbon or P52S?
Oh you ask a very interesting question indeed :) I will blogging about the P52 and review it when I get it, and I already wrote some background information that would answer your question, but it is not yet published. I can try to give a short summary here.
My signature says X1 Yoga because I still use that for work, as my P52 will be shipping in about 1-2 weeks. It is the waiting game for me.
Reason 1: RAM.
I need more memory than what was currently available in the ultrabooks. My P52 will be coming with 64GB. The X1 Yoga has 16GB, and that is very little for my use case of software development.
Reason 2: Performance
In fact, we measured all sorts of machines and configurations with our development workload, and found that the ultrabooks / U series CPU machines are just too slow compared to workstations (P series). It is not just a question of CPU or SSD or RAM, but rather the whole package. We measured compilation times, tooling operation times, etc. Previously we had taken the stance that it is ok to get an X1 for development, but we now shifting to the P series for development.
I want to stress that this is FOR OUR USE CASE, because the X1 Yoga is a fine machine and I like it very much! In fact I do recommend it to many people still. And of course you can develop all kinds of things with it. In fact, some people at our company use the X1 Yoga 3rd gen for development, but they do different kind of work than me / my group.
So these are the main reasons I am going for a machine with H series CPU.
The X1 Carbon and the P52S has U series CPUs, which are a no go at this point for us. The 15.6" X1 Carbon you are referring to might get H series 6 cores, but it will be thinner than the P52. And unfortunately notebook manufacturers can't change physics: thinner design means more thermal throttling and by that less performance. How this would manifest in the 15.6" X1 Carbon we of course don't know yet. Then there is the rumored P1 as well, but that might be thinner as well, so basically same story as the 15.6" X1 Carbon with the thermals.
I have been waiting for the P52 since January. I hoped it will get announced in the March-April timeframe, but that did not happen. And I just cannot wait any longer to find out if in fact the 15.6" X1 Carbon or the P1 would be ok as well. I need a new machine now that the summer holidays are over and big projects are starting for us :)
Oh, and I wanted the P3200 - I hope to use the P52 for some gaming :)
(My P52 will be: i7-8850H, P3200, 64GB RAM, 2x1TB SSD, FHD)
