Re: P52 WWAN option

2018-11-08, 1:31 AM

Hi lenardg,

I read your Lenovo P52 review, nice work! ;) I have an old Thinkpad W540 that I need to upgrade and the P52 seems perfect, EXCEPT for the fact that even now (Nov 7th, 2018), I can't seem to configure one with the WWAN / LTE option in the US. No one seems to know when this will be available either.

Question: Did you ever look and see into your P52 as to whether the all important antennas are installed? I added WWAN to my W540 after I bought it and would like to do the same here if I can.

Another question: They are asking for $800+ for 1TB NVe M2 SSD, when I can find a 1TB Samsung Evo 860 / 960 NVe M2, et on Amazon for around $250 - 300. Thinking of just going with the base 500GB HDD and then upgrading later. Same with RAM. Thoughts?

I appreciate your time and insight, thanks!

Re: P52 WWAN option

Hi J'son,

I never got around to opening up my P52, because the WWAN is located under the keyboard. Removing the keyboard requires a special tool that I was not able to obtain yet. Some had luck removing it without the tool, but I did not want to push my luck with it.

I have been using a Mobile WIFI access point that shares an LTE connection over Wifi. This way my other devices benefit from the shared LTE connection as well. It might not be as convenient as the built in WWAN, but I need the LTE connection so rarely that I can live with this for the time being.

If you can upgrade the RAM and SSD for cheaper, then go ahead with that route (order with HDD, upgrade yourself). ThinkPads are mostly easy to upgrade and support third party upgrades.
