P52s + Thunderbolt 3 Gen2 dock limits external display to 4k @ 30Hz

2019-05-29, 4:57 AM

Hi,

I'm having issues with my external 4k display to only be able to operate at 30Hz. I have my laptop connected to a generation 2 Thunderbolt 3 dock via the provided cable, and from there I have tried both DisplayPort and HDMI cables (several) to connect to my display.

All the technical information I have seen says that my laptop plus the dock should be able to operate at 60Hz even at this resolution, but I'm unable to lock down the settings that enable me to do that.

I have pulled the latest BIOS, TB3 FW, display drivers, Intel chipset drivers from the product page.

My screen is: AOC U3277FWQ if that matters.

I'm running Windows 10 Pro 1809.

Has anyone battled with the same issue? I'm running out of ideas on how to solve this.

The HDMI port on the side is apparently only 1.4 so this would only support the 4k@30Hz, but I'm not using it at the moment. If I set the screen to 1920x1080, I can set the resolution to 60Hz.

Best regards,

_tero

Hello _tero!

Welcome to the Lenovo Community Forums. Turn on the Displayport 1.2 on your monitors configuration. Then go to NVIDIA control panel and make sure that 3840x2160 info with 60hz is selected. You can try to plug in the Monitor directly to the laptop first to isolate the problem using DP 1.2 or HDMI 2.0 cables.

Try updating the dock driver and firmware: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/pd500265

Let us know how it goes.

Hi Hassen,

The DisplayPort 1.2 is selected on the display, and like said, I have updated all drivers I could find from the Lenovo support page. I did update from the link you gave, but it did not help.

I don't understand why you would suggest using a direct DP 1.2 cable from the laptop to the display, as the laptop only has an HDMI 1.4 compatible outlet on it. Have you checked the correct model for the help? This model is, like the header says, P52s. Emphasizing the 's'.

But these steps did not help me solve the issue.

NVIDIA control panel does not offer any customization options, aside from the 3D settings per app. BIOS does not offer to help to switch to the dedicated GPU by disabling the integrated graphics.

I tried creating a custom resolution using the Intel Graphics control panel, and when I put in 3840x2160@60Hz, it says that bandwidht is not sufficient. I can create one with 30Hz, so something is not functioning properly.

So my question is, since Lenovo is advertising this so that I can get to 3840x2160@60Hz, how do I do that? If it matters, the Thunderbolt management software does not show the docking station under devices.

Best regards,

_tero

Hi Hassen,

I ended up reinstalling everything related to displays or docking stations and I now have the 60Hz mode available as well.

Thank you for your assistance.

Best regards,

_tero
