P53 and TB3 Workstation Gen2 dock?

2019-12-28, 14:07 PM

The TB3 workstation Gen2 dock now only comes with the 230W PSU while the previous version came with the 230W PSU + 65W PSU. My P53 came with a 230W PSU because of the RTX5000 GPU. My question is: The new dock has a power splitter that splits the 230W power into 170W and 65W according to the manual. Will this dock be compatible for my system given that it came with the 230W PSU? I'm not understanding why the reduced power input of 170W to the system is acceptable, but not the 170W PSU as an alternative to the P53 230W PSU.

Wait till there is a firmware update for the dock if you plan on purchasing it, i've had some issues with the dock on my P53.

You raise a rather obvious point that undermines the thinking behind "streamlining" 40AN0230xx to 40ANY230xx. If we needed 230W to begin with for just the laptop...and now that 230W is driving a dock that supposedly needed 295W before...well, I too, would like to see the reasoning here, and especially if you ordered a fully loaded Xeon/RTX5000 P73 to begin with.

I'd also like to see how they can justify keeping the $350-$400 price from one to the other when they swap out a $60 65W adapter for a $16 Y cable.

I only have the V1, and while there isn't a Kill-a-watt around to measure how much power it consumes from the 65W, it's not anywhere near 65W as it's barely warm with all ports used.

65W was originally included probably because it's the smallest available adapter with a slim tip.
