P70 - Fingerprint reader does not start with Windows 10 Creator

My fingerprint reader will not start under Windows 10 Creator when my external keyboard which has a builtin fingerprint reader is attached. The Device Manager shows that the internal reader is enabled but cannot start (Code 10). If I disable the device and then re-enable the device, then the fingerprint reader starts and will continue to function normally until shutdow. I have the latest Synaptics driver installed 5.1.327.26, but no change. If I do not have the P70 docked, then the fingerprint reader works fine. Suggestions?

Re: P70 - Fingerprint reader does not start with Windows 10 Creator

I don't have an external reader attached but my p70 internal reader works docked and undocked.  I use the fingerprint for power-on, supervisor, disk and windows passwords. I have latest drivers and creators update installed

Re: P70 - Fingerprint reader does not start with Windows 10 Creator

Who makes the fingerprint reader in the external keyboard?  I recently had an issue where the driver for the external reader somehow caused a conflict in the driver for the internal reader, even though they were both Synaptics devices.  See here:  https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/forums/v3_1/forumtopicpage/board-id/tp01_en/page/1/thread-id/118766

Re: P70 - Fingerprint reader does not start with Windows 10 Creator

I am using the Lenovo external usb keyboard with fingerprint reader. The problems only started with Windows 10 Creator edition. I've updated the internal fingerprint driver from the Lenovo support site and the external fingerprint driver via Windows update. Things now work 50% of the time for the internal fingerprint reader and Windows Hello.

Suggestions?  Both fingerprint reader are from synaptic.

Re: P70 - Fingerprint reader does not start with Windows 10 Creator

That should work OK, and I haven't heard any reports of problems with the Lenovo keyboard.  Though I will ask the fingerprint team to double-check it.  Just to clarify, are you saying that the problems started with Win10 1709?

That is correct. When the internal reader does not start, I can disable it and reenable it and then it starts. Seems like a timing conflict between the two drivers. external driver is: 4.5.514.0, internal driver is: 5.1.327.26

UPDATED the driver orientations.

I believe you have the Internal and External driver versions reversed, right?  Can you please double-check them?  Thanks!

Updated original post with corrected assignments (they were reversed). Thank you.

Re: P70 - Fingerprint reader does not start with Windows 10 Creator

I am trying to reproduce this with the same driver versions you are using.  Do you know if the dock is required to reproduce this?  Or can it be reproduced with the P70 undocked and the fingerprint keyboard attached directly to a P70 USB port?

Also, you mentioned the repro step is "shutdown".  Is that correct?

Is Fast Startup enabled?

Does "restart" (instead of "shutdown") reproduce the issue?

1. Fast startup is not enabled

2. If the internal FPR has not started, then a restart will bring it back. If I shutdown completely, then it's hit or miss if the internal FPR starts up.

3. I only run with the keyboard attached through the workstation dock. I've never tried it without the dock.

4. BIOS level is 2.19

Interestingly, the external fpr never fails to start, but only the internal fpr seems to be affected. This configuration has been running since I received my P70 in March of 2016. The symptoms have only shown up with Windows 10 Creator. Of course, there could be a driver update for both fpr's that could be contributing factors, but both of the dates on the respective drivers are May, 2017.

Thanks for taking the time to determine the issue.
