P70: When can we expect Kaby Lake/7th Gen Intel?

2016-10-21, 13:53 PM

Anyone have any idea when we would see the P70 updated with the Kaby Lake 7th Generation Intel processor? Seems like the flagship portable workstation should have the newer processor and if I understand it correctly it should be easy to do since the chip architecture is similar.

Based on Lenovo's history, I would expect to wait until the P71 is released for the base components to be upgraded a generation.

That's just my gut feeling, but I have no proof one way or another.

I would guess Jan 2017 at the earliest? I suspect they'll wait until both the updated Kaby Lake quad cores and nVidia P series quadro's are available.

I wouldn't get too excited about Kaby Lake for high end quad core mobile workstations it's a modest spec bump and isn't an architectural change. Intel have dropped their tick tock roadmap.

The next gen quadro on the other hand is a different matter, the manufacturing process shrink to 16nm on the 10 series consumer cards has resulted in a substantial performance and efficiency gain.
