P70 Win10 Venting frustrations Dock, Win10, Multiple Displays

2016-12-17, 11:17 AM

Just got a P70 XEON and just need to vent some frustrations about it. It could be so perfect but it is not!

1. Display Drivers / Non-Optimal Optimus - crashes when moving video windows around. Did such a bad crash Win10 disabled BOTH Intel and NVidia Driver... and reverted to Win10 Basic Video driver....

2. Display Drivers - if built in LCD is not the PRIMARY Windows display - you can't play full screen video on other screens

3. Workstation Dock - that was really designed by someone who does not use MULTIPLE DISPLAYs. Can we please have 3-5 independent monitor outputs on the next dock please?

4. My Windows install will not show parts of the "New settings panels" - I think mine used to be a Win7 inplace upgraded to Win10. Tried every trick in the book to fix it but no go so far. Then went on to try and download recovery media - but that service is CLOSED for Maintenance FROM LENOVO for the entire weekend. Great thanks...

5. NVidia activity display / task bar icon - rarely works...

Apart from the long road ahead on reinstalling Win10 - I do like the P70 - but it could have been designed by better designers for REAL multi screen usage. All the above rants are only about things I have batteled to fix.... Everything else (like no sound on first installation) I have managed to solve. Rest I have spent MANY hours trying to fix. All drivers/firmware etc. are LATEST available from Lenovo.

/rant /vent over for now.

I share your frustration with the dock. I reserched it thoroughly and decided it was a pointless purchase the way they have crippled it. The whole point I too would have bought the dock would have been to make it easier to connect external high resolution monitors but you are right whoever designed it lives in the past with the horrible lack of support they have for runing multiple displays at 4K/5K resolution.

I decided not to buy th edock and put up with the multiple wires sticking out of the laptop but at least I will be able to connect multiple minotors at full reolution.

ohh and almost forgot... When I then enabled the broken/disabled windows Intel 530 drivers - they auto updated with the latest version from Intel via M$. That caused the fans to go haywire and seems like the temperature sensor does not measure correct with those. So if anyone have funny fan's after Intel upgrade - uninstall and re-install from Lenovo... (Sensor data with latest Intel drivers was extremely erratic jumping from 40 to 69 to 42 to 67  and so on within seconds..) with very little load.

Has hardware really become so complex now no-one can write firmware & drivers any longer? (ask me the hardware designer / EE)....

230W dock supports up to 5 displays with P50/P70

- personally, I use three displays (LCD + 2 FHD's)

Perhaps that in-place Win7 to Win10 upgrades does not go very smoothly, but with Win10 fresh-installed (does not take long) I don't have many problems with the dock and multiple monitors.

That is, if I forget the fact that the dock can't drive 2x4K@60Hz monitors. 3 low-res screens (1920x1200) + the laptop LCD work just fine, can play video on any etc.

Except this is a modern laptop workstation. I can't even imagine using a 1080p display for work. The point many are making is that unless the dock can support multiple 4k60hz monitors it is pointless for some of us. I don't care how many 1080p displays the dock can support when 1080p is too low of a screen resolution for the work I do.

No DOCK + P70 can drive up to 5 screens.

Workstation Dock max 3 on it's own- where 2 is digital - and 1 analogue.
