P71 doesn't start

I have a P71 just 3 months out of its 1 year warranty and it does not start. The power button light is green but pressing it does nothing: no fans, no beeps.

Things I tried:

  • I removed AC and the battery for a while, re-inserted. Nothing.
  • I removed the battery, AC power, disconnected the CMOS battery for many minutes. Re-installed all. Nothing.
  • I removed my WIFI module, two M.2 SSDs and all 4 SODIMMs, battery+AC, disconnected CMOS battery for many minutes. Re-installed just CMOS battery + battery + AC (left out drives, ram, and wifi). Nothing.

All signs point to a bad motherboard.

What are my options? How much is a new motherboard?

Re: P71 doesn't start

That sounds poor.  There is only one more thing I would try before searching eBay for a motherboard.  Try starting without the main battery - on A/C alone.  If the battery is shorted, it will act like that.

Re: P71 doesn't start

Is it possible that your charger is dead and battery is discharged?

Can still give out enought juice to drive that green light but nothing else.

Just a wild guess ...

Re: P71 doesn't start

the green light doesn't flash until the power circuitry identifies a good 20v

Don't think so - I have two chargers and tried both.

No luck using A/C alone. Thanks.

Re: P71 doesn't start

Another question: has anyone successfully had Lenovo fix a laptop just out of warranty? I've bought a lot of Lenovos and never had one die 15 months later. It makes me question the quality of the brand.

Re: P71 doesn't start

And another question...

My P71 has 64gb ram and two M.2 1tb drives. I'm fairly sure they are still good and they are a major chunk of the cost of the laptop. Is there a "Lenovo depot" or something where I can buy a barebones "old/new" P71 (with 2-3 year warranty) cheaply and install my RAM and disks?

Re: P71 doesn't start

There is an outlet store at

https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/outletus/laptops/c/LAPTOPS

but they would be more likely to have a P72 than a P71

There is eBay
