This is my first posting here but a long time lurker.
I've just bought a P72 (E-2176 Xeon) workstation to replace my trusty P50 and as I'm in the process of getting the older one ready for selling I'm looking into perhaps using the two Samsung 970 Pros in the P72 (I still have the original 1TB PM961 that came with the P50).
Here's my question though, is it worth it to set up a RAID0 in the P72?
I'm a software developer and a connoisseur of high end electronics so I like to be at the ultimate performance (even when something less 'will do').
The reason for my doubt is that when upgrading the P50 from a 1TB Samsung PM961 to two 512GB striped / RAID0 it didn't make a noticable difference.
The P50 is kitted out to the max with a Xeon E3-1535m-V5 and 64GB non ECC RAM (of which 8GB are used for a RAM disk for all the temp folders, Windows, browsers etc.).
So anyone had experience with RAID0 on a P72 or has a story to tell?

When you say "noticeable", do you mean when you are doing any real work or when running a benchmark test? If you are talking about real work, you are going to need to be specific on what you are actually doing so someone doing similar tasks, but I am doubtful that you will find someone. In real life, when you are writing to a disk, a RAID0 helps only when the reading or writing to the disk is the actual bottleneck. The SSD you are talking about is quite fast and you would need to be doing work that sent data through the controller and over the bus faster than the drive could handle it, so that the data can be striped over two drives. If the application you are running cannot deal with the data fast enough or the bottleneck is the PCIe bus, the RAID will add complexity with no benefit.
If you are talking about getting higher scores in a benchmark, you need to say what program is being used to calculate the score. My experience has been that with 2 disk setups, often, 1 drive appears faster using one benchmark program and a different program yields a different winner.

Interesting you mention that in certain cases it could actually be slower. When I benchmarked the RAID setup and compared against the X1C I have the results were around 2,300 for the RAID and 2,900 for the X1C (CrystalDiskMark Seq Q32T1). Quite disappointing for the P50 but good for the X1C (1TB PM981). I've just ran the same for the P72 and am getting 2,900 for some Intel 6000 seried SSD. Maybe the RAID controller in the P50 just isn't up to scratch?
I do like benchmarks but what I'm ultimately after is just to run my development environments & databases faster.

That would be interesting yeah.
From my post above, I think it would be a wasted opportunity for me not to try the two 970s striped in the P72 before deciding if I sell them with the P50. Just need time to do it!

The two primary advantages of RAID 0 configuration on the P72 is the summation of the storage AND the parallel writes/reads allowed. I'm running RAID 1 on my P70 for data integrity and the reads/writes are about the same as they would have been with a single SSD. However, you do have the ability with the Intel RST to set the write buffering to be immediate instead of using the Windows write buffering. The Samsung SSD does have the capability to keep the power on enough to finish a write should the system totally shutdown but I've never experienced that in 3 years of running. There should definitely be a difference in real-world applications in the I/O performace compared to a single storage device.

I have a P51 Xeon with 64gb ECC ram - set up with a pair of 1tb 960 Pro drives in a mirror RAID 1 configuration. This thing is smoking fast, and i use Autocad, Pro E, and Photoshop on a regular basis
