Presentation Director: (a) captures incorrect settings; (b) "settings ... cannot be applied"

2011-12-01, 3:29 AM

(Sorry, I just realized that I should have posted this here: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkVantage-Technologies/Presentation-Director-Error/m-p/3862#M1497)

My laptop: W500, part number = 4061-BK8,

video = 512MB ATI FireGL V5700

display = 15.4in 1920x1200 LCD

No docking station

OS = Windows XP SP3

I plugged in an external monitor to the VGA port:

IBM ThinkVision LCD, model 9419-HB7.  Max res., according to Windows Control Panel > Display, is 2048x1536.

In Windows Control Panel > Display, I set

ThinkPad LCD to 1440x900, color quality = 16 bit, primary monitor

External ThinkVision LCD to 1280x1024, color quality = 16 bit

Extend Windows desktop to 2nd monitor

Under Advanced: DPI setting = Normal size (96 DPI)

It worked fine.

In Presentation Director 4.32 [7ZUA31WW] [US], I created a new setting identical to this working set-up:

Notebook LCD + external analog monitor, extended desktop

Notebook LCD: Resolution 1440 x 900 (WXGA+)

Color quality: Medium (16 bit)

External monitor:

Resolution: 1280x1024 (SXGA)

Color quality: Medium (16 bit)

Refresh Rate: 60 Hz (the lowest possible)

Primary monitor: Notebook LCD

Position of external monitor: Right of Notebook

Clicked "Test" button.  Error:

Some of the settings you have selected cannot be applied properly.  Change the setting and try again"

(This error popped up twice; I clicked OK each time to dismiss.)

I knew these settings worked, so I just clicked Next, and on the next page "Finish".

Back on main page, I tried to Apply the new settings.  Error:

"The following settings you have selected cannot be applied properly.  Change the setting and try again.  Display Configuration."

I also tried the "Capture" feature with my working settings; what it captured was:

Both monitors: resolution 1440x900, color = 32 bit, 60 hz

What is wrong?

Finally, after going thru these settings a few times, when I clicked on upper left corner of main screen and selected "About" for the 2nd or 3rd time, I could not dismiss the pop-up.  Had to kill the program in Windows Task Manager.
