Please can you also advice the maximum storage capacity HDD (can i install 2TB) i can install in the Thinkpad W520? And should i be looking for a 7mm or a 9.5mm disk?

In a W520 any of them will fit. No problem with a 2TB drive either...

Perhaps too late, but maybe my experience might be useful to you or others. I installed this 2TB drive in the main bay of my W520. I have an MSATA SSD as the boot drive, so this HD is mainly for storage, as well as containing a back-up boot partition.

The Samsung/Seagate drive is 9.5 mm high. A 7 mm drive will fit, but you may have to acquire appropriate rubber rails to keep it from flopping around, 2.5 mm worth, within the bay. I haven't installed a 7 mm drive, though. Perhaps others can advise whether the extra headroom is a problem or not.
