Replace Intel AC-7260 WiFi Adapter in W541?

2018-11-11, 12:26 PM

Has anyone tried or know if it's possible to replace the Intel AC-7260 Wi-fi Adapter in the W541 models? I've been having problems with it the past few months in that when using the 5GHZ band, the adapter loses connection or just crashes all together. I have reboot to use Wi-Fi again. This does not happen when using 2.4 GHZ. It looks to be a problem with the Intel hardware, based on other posts I've found. I've tried changing drivers, reinstalling them, etc. I'm beginning to think it's a hardware issue.

Thanks

Update, I found a hardware maintenance manual so it looks easy to remove. Any suggestions on what would be good to replace it with?

Hi the 7260 is an NGFF wireless card. I would try with an Intel 9260 with an added bonus of Bluetooth 5.0. Make sure to install the corresponding drivers and opt for a FRU 01AX769 branded card. (apx 20USD)This device driver should then work: https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n2ciw07w.exe

EDIT: I don't want to mislead anyonee, I am informed that 40-series was the last with a WLAN whitelist, and W541 is newer than 40-series, however maybe not enough new to qualify for an eased wifi whitelist. I will try myself at some point.

Thanks, I'll look into seeing where I can get that card. Seems cheap enough to try. I wish I could find an older driver for the 7260 card because I think it would work. It seems this problem started happening with the 18.* drivers.

W541 will not work (not boot) with unapproved wireless card, Intel 9260 including. Only Intel 7260 card with Lenovo FRU code are approved, with and without vPro feature.

Thanks for that. I was wondering about the whitelist, and i came across a seller, but states it doesn't work with the Lenovo, but another says it does. Anyone know where I can get older drivers for the intel adapter. The 5GHz is not usable. And I'm not certain replacing it with another 7260 card will work.

I'd like to try something in the 17s. The current version is in the 18s.

Driver version = 18.33.14.3 for Windows 10 for 7265 (Rev. C), 7260 and 3160 adapters.

I can't find anything older on either site (Intel or Lenovo)

I use 18.33.13.4 in my W541 and it works well with 5GHz here, connects at 866Mbps with Linksys EA9500 router.

The range on 5GHz is shorter than 2.4 normally.

Before wasting any money, what are the settings you use and what router are you connecting to?
Is it in the same room? Typically what could happen is that you have a new neighbour that interfears with your wireless channel reducing the range you might have had previously.

Could you share your Advanced properties of your 7260 card, esp Roaming Aggressiveness and Transmit Power?

I successfully heard people using 9260 in E570 and will try to order one myself and try.

The initial release for the W541 was 18.40.2 so you won't find anything older on the Lenovo site - at least not on the W541 page.  If you want to try that one, or one of the later ones prior to the newest, just copy the current download link and edit in the specific version from the readme.
