Smart Card Reader Door

So I got my P50 with a smart card reader thinking it was the same thing as an SD card reader. I turned out to be wrong. Anyway, I was wondering if there's an accessory or part I can order to fill in the slot while a card is not in there; I don't want dust, particles, etc. getting into what amounts to a whole in the machine.

Re: Smart Card Reader Door

Hello,

You could order a smart card to insert in the slot, or just use an old credit card.

Re: Smart Card Reader Door

is there anywhere I can get the stock part that would've come in the crevice had I not chosen the smart card option? I looked on IBM's site, and can't find it, tho I'm not sure I know the name of the part. I'd rather have one less open crevice for dust and other elements to get in, but I don't just wanna stick a card in there; I want something that looks right. I did pay ~$1500 for this computer.

Re: Smart Card Reader Door

So I figured out the part I would need: it's part 00UR837. I tried ordering it on IBM's maintenance part website, and almost as soon as I put the order thru, it was cancelled. This part, or something like it that can fill the slot unless one needs to put a card in there, should be available. No one should have to have a constantly open crevice on the side of his computer.

Re: Smart Card Reader Door

Hello,

Searching on "00UR837" shows a lot fo mentions of "dummy" ExpressCards, which go into the ExpressCard/34 slot on the ThinkPad P50.  Are you certain you want an ExpressCard blank, as opposed to a Smart Card blank?

An ExpressCard/34 is 75×34×5mm (LWH), while a Smart Card is 85.60×53.98×0.76 mm (LWH).

They are standard-sized devices and you may be able to find blanks/dummy cards from online stores and auctions.

Re: Smart Card Reader Door

I just tried putting a credit card into the slot, but the card is too long to fit in. There is a big portion of the card sticking out. I thought the card can pop out if I press it further into the slot, but it's not. Otherwise, I can cut the card short and fit it perfectly into the slot.

I also tried search for the smart card filler online. There seems only one for Dell computer: http://www.ebay.com/itm/REFURBISHED-Dell-Latitude-E6440-Smart-Card-Plastic-Filler-VLA1-0VJYWC-VJYWC-...
Anyone knows if it fits for P50? The seller doesn't give the dimension of the filler, and I have emailed the seller. But let me know if you can certain!

Thanks!

Re: Smart Card Reader Door

It might be part of the system Misc kit FRU 00UR838, but I have no way to confirm.

I have a P70, which would probably use the same dummy smart card, but, my P70 came with a smart card reader.  (originally delivered in Europe, where they are more commonly used)

BTW, I have nothing in mine and don't worry about it.  There are  lots of other things that are open, i.e. USB ports, vents, etc.

Re: Smart Card Reader Door

One more thing:  it is a dummy smart card reader, not a dummy smart card.  You would need to remove your reader to mount it.

Re: Smart Card Reader Door

thanks for your replies. I wish Lenovo would make that part more widely available. BTW, how commonly are smart cards used in Europe compared to the US?
