Status on W7xx Series (W720?) - 17" Series Discontinued?

Since the latest PSREF v394 (March 3rd, 2011) doesn't have any W7xx models listed, does that mean it’s been discontinued?

I was hoping to see a new W720 model sometime soon.

If the answer is yes, please make it 1" thick so it can at least compete with the MacBook Pro.  I know, I'm not asking for much considering the previous pizza box.  Smiley Surprised

Many users were hoping for a refreshed Sandy Bridge W7xx model, but it appears Lenovo said good bye to the high end mobile workstation market. The W520 will be quite powerful, albeit limited in terms of storage and video card options.

I very much agree with muol. Since W720 didn't appear on the roadmap ( http://wingsanlee.blog.so-net.ne.jp/upload/detail/image/2011-02-20T00:13:36-2c3a1.jpg.html ), it might have well been axed. If there's no W720, I'll stick to my W701 for its better screen, storage, and graphics over the W520. Don't know what the X1 is though, maybe a successor to the X301?

Re: Status on W7xx Series (W720?) - 17" Series Discontinued?

Hardly.  The W520 will be handicapped by its severely handicapped graphics processor, the Quadro 1000 or 2000M .  I don't understand Lenovo's call here.  If you want to offer something for the workstation class, at least give it a fighting chance with a decent graphics card.  Hell even the 2 year old architecture from the Geforce 260M beats the Quadro 2000M.   Don't even get me started on the 1000M which is not that much better than a Geforce 230M.

I think they dropped the ball here.  Probably due to the severe issues that the Quadro 3800M had with overheating and dying (I can personally attest to this problem), but I had hopped to see them make another effort.

I'm pretty disappointed that Lenovo has essentially dropped the 17" market and left us with a crap 15" laptop  for the W series.  At least the T series laptops are pretty good and definitely for the money a far better buy than the joke of the W's future the W520.   Who over at Lenovo made this business call anyway?  I got three words for you guys lenovo: fire this person.

FX 3800M overheating and dying? Could you elaborate on this?

Re: Status on W7xx Series (W720?) - 17" Series Discontinued?

It's probably better this way. If they had come out with an updated model (a W720), it would likely be another shortscreen abomination with 1366x768 resolution, being touted as "High Definition" like some amazing breakthrough.

I'm cautiously optimistic though. The ThinkPad line has gone through prolonged dry spells before at the high end of the line, but eventually our wait has been rewarded with a decent computer suitable for doing real work. But I'm hunkering down for a long wait though. I just bought a new fully loaded W500 on eBay and am considering getting yet another for my wife to get us through these lean times.

I doubt that a Lenovo phone would appear on a ThinkPad roadmap.

W7xx Series

Hello Muol,

Sorry for being off this topic but I couldn't find the other way.

I came across your thread about running xp-64 on w700.

I have the server 2003 x64 running on w700 and was able to use most of the lenovo's drivers.

However one thing I was not able to install: the built in network card. My system has the 82567LM nic and none of several x64 drivers I found @ lenovo worked nor did the Inte's own pro x 64 software.

Could you please tell me which driver you used?

Thanks in advance,

Slavko
