Re: Think Pad P70 - OPTICAL DRIVE WON'T WORK (PLDS DVD-RW DU8A6SH)

A couple of questions:

Does the drive show in the Device Manager?

Is it visible in "ThisPC->Devices and Drives"?

Is this the factory configuration or have you added addtional drives or partitioned an existing one(s)?

Did you install the Power DVD suite in the preload software?

Re: Think Pad P70 - OPTICAL DRIVE WON'T WORK (PLDS DVD-RW DU8A6SH)

I have the same optical drive in my Ideacentre AIO 300, with a somewhat similar issue.  I find the odd commercial DVD that isn't detected, or is detected only some of the time.  I resurrected an old HP laptop, which was able to play the dvd, so it presumably has to do with the optical hardware or firmware - PLDS dvd-rw du8a6sh is what Nero 11 tells me the drive is.  Lite-On has a driver for this, but dated 2012, and I bought the AIO in late 2016, so am wondering if the model is correct.

  • The drive shows in Windows (10, 64bit) Explorer
  • The drive shows up in Device Manager as PLDS DVD-RW DU8A6SH
  • Selecting check for updates in Device Manager says "the best drivers for your device are already installed"  (existing is 2006!)

I found a Lenovo driver update utility https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds035586, but it says current firmware is DL62 and there is no new firmware found.

Lite-On has a "smartpack" utility (2012) that checks the firmware version, and came up with a similar result - no newer update available.

http://www.liteonodd.com/en/service-support/download/cat_view/44-/54-  (scroll down to the bottom).

So, I still have the issue.  Next is to buy an external DVD burner maybe?

Sounds like the laser is dirty. There are cleaning discs available to handle the dust buildup. You might also try to blow out the dust with compressed air.
