ThinkPad P50: Synaptics Driver Update Breaks TrackPoint Scrolling

2017-04-07, 20:21 PM

Last night (4/6/2017) an automatic Windows update just now decided to install the most recent Synaptics driver (titled Synaptics - Mouse - 1/11/2017 12:00:00 AM - 19.3.4.66), which apparently is nearly 3 months old at this point.  One thing this update seems to have fixed is an issue I’ve been having with my ThinkPads for upwards of 7 years – randomly it resets my mouse wheel 'number of lines scrolled per notch' option back to 1 (I prefer 3) pretty much daily, which is a HUGE annoyance, so I’m very grateful for this update and I’d like to keep it.

However, it also completely disabled middle click scrolling with my TrackPoint (yes, I have “Use for scrolling” checked under the TrackPoint settings).  The middle button does nothing now, unless I check “Use as middle click”.  Rolling back the Synaptics driver to the previous one fixes this issue. Confoundingly, the TrackPoint scrolling with my ThinkPad Bluetooth keyboard still works fine. Has anyone else experienced this problem?  Any ideas how to re-enable TrackPoint scrolling on this newest driver?

System details:

ThinkPad P50 – Xeon E3-1505M v5 (1080p touchscreen, if that matters), 16 GB ECC RAM

Windows 10 64-bit, all available updates applied

All available Lenovo updates applied (except for that Connect2 nonsense)

Sidebar: running the tweak, TPMiddle, enables a middle click function when the scrolling option is selected in TrackPoint settings, but has no effect on the scrolling issue (it persists with or without TPMiddle running).  The takeaway is that the middle button is indeed registering.

Found a solution. Roll-back the driver.

* Press win+X;
* Press M ; This will open device manager
* Go to "Mice and other pointing device"
* double click "Synaptics Pointing Device"
* Go to "Driver" tab
* Click on "Roll Back Driver"
This worked for me.

My guess is don't install driver through windows update let lenovo companion determine the appropriate driver update. (Running a P50)

Solution for the current driver version:

Open regedit and go to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Synaptics\SynTPEnh\UltraNavPS2

Change TrackPointMode to 0x00001214

This helped me too

Just an FYI for P70 owners the update applied a driver update for it, Synaptics - Mouse - 1/11/2017 12:00:00 AM - 19.3.4.66.  I had no issues. I was on the lastest version from Lenovo's site before I upgraded.

I have 19.3.4.66 as well, but this registry change doesn't fix the problem for me. TrackPoint + Middle Button still fails to scroll.

Within HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Synaptics\SynTPEnh\UltraNavPS2, here are my key/value pairs:

TrackPointMode: 0x00001214

TrackPointModeFunction: 0x00000011

TrackPointScrollMethod: 0x00000001

I'm going to roll back the most recent change, and will post again if that fails.

Confirmed: for me, the fix was to roll back to the last version of the driver, then let Lenovo Companion's "System Update" check for the correct version of the Synaptics driver. It picked 19.3.4.48, NOT 19.3.4.66 (which is what Windows Update automatically installed).
