ThinkPad P51 - Screen brightness always at maximum in Discrete Graphics mode

The first and only bug so far I have encountered with my P51: Out of the box, the machine is set with the Hybrid mode in BIOS, meaning it switches between the Intel GPU and the Nvidia Quadro M2200 (Optimus). I want my machine to always use the discrete GPU, so I switch to Discrete mode in the BIOS.

This however means that you can no longer change the screen brightness of the internal screen, it is always set at 100 %. Definitely seems like a driver bug. I have tried reinstalling Windows already, same result: With the Hybrid mode I can change the screen brightness, with the discrete mode I can´t.

Re: ThinkPad P51 - Screen brightness always at maximum in Discrete Graphics mode

This issue happens because Windows Update installs a new NVIDIA driver (22.21.13.8178) which is not compatible with ThinkPad P51.  The driver that is currently qualified for P51 is 21.21.13.7652, with this version the brightness can be adjusted.  On my system, I clicked on the "Roll Back Driver" button in Device Manager, please see if you can do the same.  Meanwhile we are checking with Microsoft and NVIDIA about why they are pushing out this driver that doesn't work.  Sorry for this trouble.

Thanks again, but unfortunately, it does not solve the problem. Since I reinstalled Windows, it only goes back to the Generic Windows Display Driver when I did the roll-back. I now installed the driver that is provided on the Lenovo Site, which curiously isn´t 21.21.13.7652. On the Lenovo Support site, I could only find 21.21.13.8167. I installed this one, but I still can´t change the display-brightness.

I agree that latest version on support website (22.21.13.8167) has same problem.  Can you please try the previous version (21.21.13.7674)?  It is working for me here.

That driver indeed solves the problem. Thank you, someotherguy! Smiley Happy Now I can enjoy using the 4K panel in my P51 to its fullest extend.

Some comment that P50 4K screen wasn't too good. Are you happy with your screen? Is it the OLED verstion? Thanks.

Re: ThinkPad P51 - Screen brightness always at maximum in Discrete Graphics mode

So .... I have the same question as "smonrad"  .....

How is the 4K screen? Color depth? Is it better than the P50 screen?

I ask as I am waiting to receive my own P51 which I ordered last week.

It will be replacing my 8 year old dead Elitebook, which had a 10 bit FHD (in hardware) screen - I do not want to experience a downgrade in color depth or quality.

Your comments would be most welcome and appreciated!

Re: ThinkPad P51 - Screen brightness always at maximum in Discrete Graphics mode

The 4K screen is great, mine is made by AUO and has the model number B156ZAN02.1. Not the brightest screen in the world definitely, but the viewing angles are good. No PWM. 100% sRGB, 100 % AdobeRGB, 97 % NTSC (measured with a Spyder 4 Pro).
