Re: ThinkPad P51 comming soon?

Especially if it's announced mid-February, it most likely won't ship until Summer (judging from Lenovo's previous years' product launch timelines). I wouldn't cancel any orders.

Re: ThinkPad P51 comming soon?

I'm looking forward to the P51 announcement too.  On one Asian website, I saw someone write (after translating to English) an announcement date of February 8th.  Anyway, my best comparision reference point for the P51 will be the recently announced MSI WS63 7RK 15" mobile workstation, with an i7-7700HQ CPU, a Nvidia Quadro P3000 GPU with 6 GB GDDR5 VRAM, a NVME PCIE SSD drive and DDR4 2400MHz RAM.  We'll hear something soon, I hope.

Re: ThinkPad P51 comming soon?

I am also quite excited about the idea of Pascal P51, but just to make sure I follow; I doubt they will include the P3000 in the P50. as that is 75watt GPU, while the M2000M is a 55watt GPU. so unless they invest the time and engineer to improve cooling inside the chassis (unlikely) I dont think neither Dell or Lenovo or HP, will replace M2000M for P3000.

now there will be improvement for sure, but if we get guided by TDP, the new 55 watt equivalent would be M2200. It is still Maxwell, but has the number of Cores that before the M3000M had. so still an improvement.

(I am just reading from here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/quadro-for-mobile-workstations.html )

There is also the possibility that I am just too ignorant about this, but I think the P3000 in the P50 chassis is just a daydream.

Re: ThinkPad P51 comming soon?

As far as I know, there are not yet any 7th generation quad-core mobile processors.  I have no inside information, but I wouldn't expect a workstation model upgrade untel there is a new processor.

Re: ThinkPad P51 comming soon?

I have heard that they are not yet shipping the i7 quad mobile, other than "ES" versions.  (I could be wrong)  If you look at the link, the recommended price is "N/A".  I would expect to see P51/P71 (or whatever they are called) models with i7 and Xeon at the same time.

Re: ThinkPad P51 comming soon?

Newegg appears to be offering/shipping the MSI model I referenced earlier with the quad core i7 for US$2599 here: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834154527    (Edit: Can't seem to fix the hyperlink, so copy/paste it directly).  They say they have it in stock now.  However, I want to see what the P51 will be.

Not the first time I was wrong, and it probably won't be the last.

Re: ThinkPad P51 comming soon?

Stable and True Blue or Bleeding Edge? Long ago, folks complained about the original IBM Thinkpads. Their complaint was simple: Not new enough cutting edge technology. Yet every IBM Thinkpad performed flawlessly. There wouldn't have been the numerous issues we all read about here plaguing the P50 with an IBM model. My point is maybe the P51 needs not be bleeding edge technology as much as a more thought-out, stable, reliable mobile workstation with few, if any, flaws.
