ThinkPad P52 Buyer Questions

2019-03-16, 13:02 PM

Haii, I'm just curious about some technical details, to help me choose between the P52 and P1.

1. Does the ThinkPad P52 have any high-power USB Type-A ports that can power a 2.5" HDD? (900mA at 5V)

2. Can the touchpad do 3-finger drag (e.g. to move files around)?
The manual doesn't say anything about customizing gestures, and the default is to show task view/desktop.

3. Can it use the discrete GPU (Quadro P2000) for the built-in display? Yes. Is the GPU switching multiplexed or Optimus-based?

4. Why is the memory frequency limited to 2400MHz due to an "Intel limitation" (as noted in the P52 specs sheet) while the ThinkPad P1 indicates no such limitation?
(configured with the same motherboard and CPU – i7-8850H)

5. What's the refresh rate of the display?

1. For as long as I can remember, all ThinkPad USB ports can power external 2.5" HDDs or SDs

2. The P52 uses an Elan Touchpad. What you can do with the Tocuhpad is now controlled by Windows 10 itself and not a specific driver. As for what I can see, Windows 10 does not allow you to use 3 fingers to drag.

3.You can use either the P2000 or Intel UHD P630 as you main driver, or in Auto mode.

4. My P52 has PC4-21300 (2666) memory so I am not sure what you are referring to.  And this is the stock memory from Lenovo.

5.  Not sure how to measure this but Cinebench R15 OpenGL test reports 150 fps.

All I can add is the fact that I have neded had an issue with direct connect 2.5" HDD and SSD, but I use a powered hub whenever I need to attach  USB DVD drive.

Just to add to @richk's comment.

The P52 WILL power USB attached SLIM/UltraSLIM DVD/BluRAY drives. But it will not power 3.5" drives.
