ThinkPad P52S - what do I need to replace SATA III HDD to SSD M.2 PCIe NVMe

2018-04-10, 10:44 AM

I recently bought ThinkPad P52S with following storage option:

1TB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm, 2.5", SATA3

and realized that I need to change this one for

256 GB Solid State Drive, PCIe NVMe M.2 drive

I am affraid even this laptop supports both models it is not easy to make this upgrade.

Actually, I would like to know which parts I need to order from lenovo in odred to replace old SATA HDD with new one M.2 PCIe NVMe drive (I already have one).

I tried to do it using Support - Parts & Accesories - schematic view TP_T580_P52s_Main_FRUs Components on the page:

https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-p-series-laptops/thinkpad-p52s-type-20lb-20lc/20lb/parts?linkTrack=Homepage%3ABody_Search+Products&searchType=4&keyWordSearch=P52s%2520%2528Type%252020LB%252C%252020LC%2529%2520Laptop%2520%2528ThinkPad%2529%2520-%2520Type%252020LB

but, honestly I could not relize what I should order.

I guess that I need one internal cable, and metalic mount "box" (size similar/same to existing SATA HDD) which contains 2 connectors (one for cable which connects mainboard and "box" (I am not sure does existing cable is good), and other connector where I should inserd M.2 PCIe SSD.

I would appreciate if someone can advice which part numbers i need to purchase in order to make feasible usage of the M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD instead of aforementioned SATAIII HDD.

Thanks in advance to all of you!

Hello,

I had a little trouble figuring out the machine type model numbers for the P52s, but I believe the following parts are what you need:

01YR466 - M.2 Adapater Cable, TC-2

01YR457 - M.2 Adapter ASM for Tachi-2(20L9/20LA/20LB/20LC), TC-2

I would strongly suggest calling Lenovo support and confirming this before you make a purchase, though.

Thank you for provided data.

It works perfetly well. Actually delivery of the spare replacing parts took long time but once i got all the parts (both you said) it was hassle free instalation.

I bought samsung 970pro m.2 ssd and can say that my P52S now is like flash!

Thank you!

From the model name of SSD (samsung 970pro m.2 ssd) should be PCIe connection.

The question (Subject) is clear that SSD should be M.2 PCIe NVMe (the main subject was how to replace originally installed SATA HDD with this SSD M.2....).

Estoy seguro que puede ser 1 TB (probablemente mas grande, pero no soy seguro).

Mi SSD tiene capacidad de 512 Gb. Esta muy buena opcion.
