ThinkPad P53s: cannot enable AHCI mode for SATA in bios

2019-10-20, 6:33 AM

Hi,

I recently purchased P53s in Windows 10. I've been trying to dual boot with Ubuntu but the computer doesn't recognize the SSD when booting with a flash drive. In bios, I can't find a place for changing the SATA mode to AHCI (no sata configuration). Should I update the bios? Please let me know what to do. Thanks!

Re: ThinkPad P53s: cannot enable AHCI mode for SATA in bios

Hello,

As far as I know, all of the pre-configured ThinkPad P53s in the U.S. (and possibly elsewhere) ship with M.2 2280 form-factor NVMe splid state drives, so any operating system you wish to install will need NVMe drivers.  Did you replace the NVMe SSD that came with the unit with a SATA one?

Regards,

Thanks for your reply, Aryeh! However, I am not quite following what you mean by replacing the NVMe SSD that came with the unit with a SATA one. Could you please elaborate more on this? I thought all I need to do in order to enable a dual boot is to change the SATA configuration to AHCI in bios, but I just can't find this option at all in bios that came with the latest P53s (which is very weird..). Thanks again.

Hi,

I only have the online BIOS simulator to go by but I don't think that's an option for the P53s.  I'd expect the drive mode to be AHCI as is.

There may be some other reason your Ubuntu installer isn't seeing the drive.  Are you booting in UEFI or legacy mode?

Thanks for your quick response! It was in the UEFI mode (and the safe mode in order to change the SATA configuration). In bios, I can't change to the legacy boot mode according to the following:

UEFI/Legacy Boot [UEFI Only]

 - CSM Support      [No]

                                  * Unselectable for Kernel DMA Protection

Which mode should I boot the computer?

Ubuntu will boot in UEFI mode with Secure Boot ON - as you've already done.  I thought perhaps you  were booting in legacy mode and that was causing problems.

UEFI/Secure is the mode you should be (and are) booting in for a dual-boot setup.

Sorry I don't have another suggestion :(

I can still boot Ubuntu using the bootable flash drive but in Ubuntu I can't find the SSD in GParted. I just can't understand why the bios in P53s doesn't give an option to change the SATA configuration.. Thanks anyways.

One more thought:  what is the model of your SSD?  Per the PSREF P53s can be configured with Optane, which AFAIK is actually a single device with Optane cache + NVMe SSD on the same 2280 m.2 part.

I don't know if any actually shipped that way (or if I'm correct about the Optane part) but if you have one it may be that RST mode is the only drive mode available.  That would explain why Ubuntu can't see it.  Maybe...

[edit to add] I also see some mention on the interwebs that disabling the TPM chip in BIOS made the NVMe drive visible.  That sounds fishy to me but might be worth a try.

I tried disabling the TPM chip but it didn't work for me. The model of SSD is WDC PC SN730 SDBQNTY-512G. Let me know if you need more information. Thanks!

One more quick question. What if I format Windows and try to use only Ubuntu instead? Do you think in this case Ubuntu launched using the bootable flash drive can finally recognize the SSD? Or since the BIOS setting is the same (i.e., the SATA controller), it won't resolve the issue?
