ThinkPad P71 NVIDIA Quadro M620 2 Go upgrade to Quadro P4000 8 Go

I have a p71 with basic NVIDIA Quadro M620.

Is it possible to upgrade to  a Quadro P4000 8 Go? I heard it was mxm boards.

The idea is to be VR ready.

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Cheers,

Greg

Re: ThinkPad P71 NVIDIA Quadro M620 2 Go upgrade to Quadro P4000 8 Go

Hi gpallema,

Warm Greetings & welcome to Lenovo Community, happy to have you here.

It can be replaced with Quadro P4000 N17E-Q3-A1,NVIDIA (01AV354) along with this you need to replace the Thermal Module (01AV344) as well.

I hope the above information helped you.

Please feel free to post in Lenovo Community Forums if you have any further queries!

Thanks for your answer. Nice to hear that the p71 laptop can be upgraded.
Any suggestions where I could order the components?

Re: ThinkPad P71 NVIDIA Quadro M620 2 Go upgrade to Quadro P4000 8 Go

Hmmm - This is interesting, I wasn't aware that the GPU could be upgraded on the P71/P51 machines. Is the GPU not soldered to the mother board in a bga configuration similar to the Xeon cpu???

Is there anyone here that is able to confirm that the GPU is upgradeable on the P71/P51 series workstations? I looked at the service manual and see no indication of a friction or zif socket.

Hi GTgamo,

Warm Greetings & welcome to Lenovo Community, happy to have you here.

Well GPU is upgradable in P71 as it is not soldered on System Board. It uses the MXM Module in order to do so according to HMM of this model, page 105. Also you can refer to Lenovo Service Training video for Replacement of GPU which is there in the form of MXM card.

This must be only refering to the non Xeon P71, The Xeon version as i remember reading was bga on the cpu and gpu.

Irrespective of which processor is being used with the system GPU can be upgraded here, please have a look on the screenshot which is from the Xeon System Board.

Re: ThinkPad P71 NVIDIA Quadro M620 2 Go upgrade to Quadro P4000 8 Go

Having disassembled my Xeon 1535M based P71 I can attest to the fact that it's an MXM card.  Sadly the cost of replacement MXM cards are prohibitively expensive along with being hard to find.  You'd also likely need to find a Lenovo OEM replacement as OEMs often put custom BIOS on the cards that are reflected in a primary UEFI whitelist.  Meaning if you found a deal on a Dell branded P4000 and tried it in your P71 there is a good chance it wouldn't work.

Good info, thanks for the heads up, I wonder how much of the 71 modules apply to the 51...

Both ThinkPad P71 and P51 uses the same MXM module which can be upgraded same as P71.
