Thinkpad P50, Samsung 950 pro and password security

Hello.

I recently installed a Samsung 950 Pro in the P50.

After some problems during the installation it seems to work fine, but....

The 950 pro supports AES Hardware encryption (Advanced Encryption Standard, Class0 SED).

I also was able to use it with a normal SSD before. After I installed the 950 NVMe, the option for setting a harddrive Password inside the BIOS just vanished.  am not able to set any harddrive passwort and thus use encryption. Every other PW seems to work fine...

I would like to ask why that happened there and I hope that some of you may be able to help me with that.

Thank you very much,

Greetz

Re: Thinpad P50, Samsung 950 pro and password security

While 950 Pro presumably supports AES on hardware level (i.e. all data is encrypted prior being written on the flash chips), key management is still "to be supported by FW update" ( http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/minisite/SSD/global/html/ssd950pro/specificatio... )

If you want to encrypt your 950Pro, use Bitlocker or other third-party encryption solution. There is a performance and SSD wear cost associated with that, but it's negligible for most applications.

Ah ok. Thank you very much.

I thought of it, but did not really know it these two things where related to each other.

It just did not reall make sense to me, that you enable Hardware encryption but make it unusable by not giving any key management. Smiley Happy

Is already known when the formware update of Samsung will be out?

Had the exactly same issue, is it a bios defect? Please fix it ASAP.

I was searching around to find the promise for this firmware and I see this:

†† The plan to provide a firmware update to enable TCG/OPAL and IEEE1667 has been put on hold due to the currently very restricted availability of commercial security software.
