Thinkpad P52 / p72 with 128GB RAM

Hi everyone,

I wonder how can Lenovo offer Thinkpad P52 / P72 options with 128GB RAM all the Intel Processors coming with these two model (P52 and P72) including:

• 8th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-8750H
• 8th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-8850H
• 8th Generation Intel® Xeon® E-2176M
• 8th Generation Intel® Xeon® E-2186M

ONLY support 64GB RAM.

With a 64(Bit) operating system it is actually capable of over 4 million TB of ram, but you would need a football field of real estate to accommodate that machine . Sadly enough our laptops are good to hold the ram capable of the max 128GB.

Thank you JiggedBone. The problem was not the OS. The problem is the limit by INTEL CPU FOR LAPTOPS where ALL the model up to date do NOT support more than 64GB of memory.

Here is the answer from Intel which confirm that the processors shipped out with P52, P72 and Dell 7730 don't support more than 64GB RAM.

Hello and thanks for asking, below is a quote I received after reaching out to someone in the know;

"We worked with intel to qualify the new 32GB DIMMs on our new P52, P72 and P1 products.  We had to make some slight changes to the memory controller but in the end we were able to get the 32GB DIMMs to pass all our quality and engineering tests.  Although I don’t think Intel has officially changed their POR, even they agree that the memory works as expected; hence we are out selling it.  

We did this exact thing when the 16GB DIMMs came out.  They weren’t “officially” supported by Intel, but we worked with them and made it work"

The systems are currently configurable on the UK web site with 128GB, I haven't checked any others. They also mention above the P1 which only has two memory slots so I presume that was an oversight or indication to wait for 64GB memory chips to become available?

I bought the base model with 8GB ram (20M9CTO1WW) and seperately bought 32GB Ram so-dimm modules (pn4x70S69154) from Lemovo. When I inserted two of the modules under the keyboard, it recognises and starts perfectly.  However after I add the second 64GB under the laptop, it doesn't boot at all ...not even a Bios screen.

I was told by my rep that this is the memory to use.

I have upgraded my BIOS to 1.12 and controller to the latest using the Vantage upgrade tool, still no luck.

Please explain how to upgrade to 128GB RAM on this model. (I don't see any option in the BIOS to affect the memory controller at all).

Also this model is supposed to come with USB-C charging and I was given a normal 170W yellow rectangle charger, no USB-C charging seems possible)

I am really interested in how to make this work as well. In Australia there is no option for 32GB sodimm from Lenovo so I also bought the base model with E-2176M and 8GB ram. The laptop will be delivered next Monday.

I am planning to buy the 32GB sodimm from Samsung (M471A4G43MB1-CTD) as it is THE ONLY one available in the market and I really wonder if this works (https://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/dram/module/).

@AwesomeMrT could you please share with me the model of the 32GB sodimm that you purchased from Lenovo? As far as I know Samsung is the only manufacturer that can produce the 32GB sodimm for laptop at the moment.  Lenovo Australia is not selling any 32GB sodimm memory so I don't have and clue.

I believe lenovo rebrand the Samsung oem ram.. I already included the lenovo (p/n) part number above that I purchased. Btw in Aus Ramcity has the Samsung on back order to be available soon.

Thank you. I tried your product number above but copied the pn as part of the whole product number so couldn't find anything. Just recognized that the actual part number is 4x70S69154.

Yes Ramcity has back order due end of October but I am still nervous because it cost $2820 for 128GB and I am not sure if they work yet so need to find out.
