The WiFi indicator should light up when you connect to a wireless network router. It may be as simple as clicking the wireless icon in the task bar (close to the clock in the lower right if you have your task bar at the bottom). You might have to enable the wireless adapter under Control Panel | Network and Sharing Center | Change Adapter Settings (in the left column) then right clicking on the Wi-Fi icon and clicking on Enable. Please forgive me if you already know all that. Once you're connected to a wireless network that indicator light should remain on as long as you are connected.
Hope this helps.

Do you have the hotkey integration package installed?
I don't have a P52, but on all the other machines I've seen, there is a 0.5 amp fuse that just does those LEDs. I've never seen that fuse blown unless there is a backlight problem.

I don't have a ThinkPad P52, but on other ThinkPads the WLAN indicator lights up when you use wireless networking, and the drive access activity indicator lights up when the SSD or HDD is accessed. If neither of them have ever lit up when doing these, I would think there is some kind of problem inside the unit, such as loose cable.
