Thinkpad P70 + dock and 2 * 4K external monitors @ 60 Hz

Is there any official and correct information about supported multi-monitor configurations with new Thinkpads?

I'm trying to get Thinkpad P70 with M3000M + Workstation Dock (with 230W) to display different images on two external 4K monitors (Dell P2715Q), and so far without any success. Using DisplayPort 1.2 cables, no MST. Windows 10.

All works fine if I'm only connecting one monitor. Laptop screen and the monitor happily get to 4K resolution @ 60Hz. However, as soon as I connect the other monitor, one of the monitors switches to 1920x1080, and 4K resolution isn't available to choose for that monitor. If resolution is set 4K@30Hz both monitors work, but I want 60.

Tried everything. Switching between Discrete & Hybrid in BIOS, clean Windows 10 install (on a separate drive), different cables etc. Same result.

Looking for explanations, went to nVidia Control Panel,  and it reports that BOTH monitors are hooked up to the same DisplayPort (attached)?!

Can P70 drive two external 4K monitors @ 60Hz at all?

No. I suppose it's a hardware shortcut Lenovo took.

Now waiting for success stories with Thinkpads + Dell TB15 dock, and will grab that instead. So far, one P50 user in this forum reported that it does not work (yet?).

Mhh, is it possible to plug in on monitor into the dock and one into the p70 thunderbolt port directly?

Re: Thinkpad P70 + dock and 2 * 4K external monitors @ 60 Hz

I really hope so.

That would explain Lenovo reasoning (4 GPU outputs: 1 for 4K laptop screen, 2 for 2 Thunderbolt ports, 1 for MiniDP/dock/everything else).

Re: Thinkpad P70 + dock and 2 * 4K external monitors @ 60 Hz

They are correct, definitely a hardware shortcut. It will not work, I have a P50 with the same monitors (m2000m instead).

Very disappointing since I waited a long time to get the dock which was advertised as having dual DP 1.2 ports.

It's because they run off of one DP 1.2 bus (If you go to nvidia settings it will show you only 1 of 3 DP's are in use with the dock with both monitors plugged into it, or 1 of 4 possibly with m3000m).

It will drive it, but you'll have to get a USB Type C / thunderbolt to DP adapter. I'm driving both monitors, but have to unplug and plug in cable when I dock. Here's what I ordered: http://amzn.com/B00X4S5DKC

I have one plugged into dock and other into thunderbolt.

Re: Thinkpad P70 + dock and 2 * 4K external monitors @ 60 Hz

I'm the unfortunate soul who tried using the P50 with a Dell TB15.

I will return my P50 today because it's still not working. I assume it will be fixed later with a firmware update of the P50's Thunderbolt controller.

But I'm not willing to take the risk that in the end not all three DisplayPort outputs reported in the NVIDIA settings panel will be working simultaneously, due to said hardware shortcuts.

It's really a shame that Lenovo is neither capable of providing proper drivers for their Laptops, nor stating precisely which display configurations are possible in general.

Re: Thinkpad P70 + dock and 2 * 4K external monitors @ 60 Hz

It definitely will support 3 displays at full 4k.

You'll run 1 on dock and 2 on this: (will not be out for a few weeks unfortunately) http://amzn.com/B01ANR4CYE

Re: Thinkpad P70 + dock and 2 * 4K external monitors @ 60 Hz

It could still be possible (but unlikely) that the 2 Display Port channels that are accessible via Thunderbolt 3 are shared with the miniDP port on the machine.

Re: Thinkpad P70 + dock and 2 * 4K external monitors @ 60 Hz

No, I'm positive the DP channel on the dock is shared with the mDP on the laptop. When I plug in laptop on dock the mDP on laptop is disabled but the thunderbolt works fine.
