Thinkpad W510 Screen Issues After Reinstalling Windows

2018-01-03, 22:52 PM

Hello all, I have an issue with my Thinkpad W510. Immediatly after installing a fresh windows 10 onto the computer (in order to sell, the laptop already had windows 10/fedora dual booting and everything was fine.) the screen resolution became wacky. Upon booting the screen is repeated 4 times going vertically down the screen. Once booted into the OS there is a split about 2/3 down the screen and the top half of the screen is repeated on the bottom 1/3. Colors are also very dull.

I updated windows 10 fully, installed the latest nvidia driver, and rebooted, no results.

I then rolled back to windows 8 which is what i got the computer with, updated, updated drivers, and still have no option other than 1024x768 resolution. And the screen is still repeating itself.

I have also taken the computer apart, dusted, made sure the video connectors were seated. Put back together and problem persists. However, when plugging in a display via VGA it displays fine.

Is this an issue within identifying the display on the latop? Or more likely a coincidence that the fresh install of windows happened along side a hardware failure of the screen/video cable. I'm pretty stuck right now and was really needing to get this sold. Any help is appreciated thank you!

Try obtaining the correct driver from the Lenovo End of Life Archive first...

I presume you are using the Nvidia Quadro FX 880M

Does the screen become all wacky in Fedora?

I am not sure, but you might want to try a single boot solution. Although I have no evidence to prove that dual booting with a Linux OS and GRUB has such consequences on the display on boot to WIndows, it is worth a start to see how it goes.

W510: i7-720QM, 16GB, DDR3 PC10600 - 1033MHz Kingston Value RAM, 1GB Quadro FX880M, 2TB Seagate SSHD (Internal) + 2TB Seagate Firecuda SSHD (external via eSATA)

T410: i5-520M, 8GB, DDR3 PC8500 - 1066Mhz Kingston Value RAM, 512MB Geforce, 1TB Seagate SSHD (Internal) + 1TB Seagate SSHD (external via eSATA)

Never got a notification for this for some reason, hence the late reply.

I ended up resorting to a single boot OS, as well as trying multiple OS versions including Windows 7 Pro (the original OS) and installed all drivers from the Lenovo EOS page to no avail. Tried Windows 8, 10, Ubuntu 16.4, Fedora, and Puppy Linux. I also tried using different drives as well. Tried multiple reinstalls, to the same result.

I updated BIOS just to be sure it wasnt a corrupted BIOS or something, but that did nothing as well.

This leads me to believe the display itself is having some sort of issues, though it is weird i cannot get the screen to do anything differently at different angles, pressures, ect. When normally a bad display/cable can be made worse/better with movement of said cable or display.

Must be an issue i've never encountered before, and a new screen is just a bit too pricey to buy so I have turned it into a media PC of sorts running Kodi on my TV. Works well, but is a bit overkill considering its an 8 thread CPU with 16gb of RAM, but oh well.

I also wish Linux would see display ports because Id rather use that than VGA but i suppose i could always use windows and VM a linux machine to run my media programs. Im a bit bummed this screen crapped out though, i was beginning to love using the w510.

Hello,

Did you try installing the ThinkPad W510's MONITOR.INF file? It is available for download from https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/uu/en/downloads/ds015012.

TS's problem appears to be consistent across all OSes. I highly doubt the monitor file would be of any use.
