Thinkpad W540 Charging issue abroad

Hello all,

I recently have gone to Spain from the united states for a semester abroad. When I arrived my laptop (thinkpad W540) became unable to charge or will simply begin to charge and stop after several minutes.  I believe I have the correct adapter for European outlets and I have tried a charger that connects directly to European outlets and have had the same issue. I have also tried a brand new battery with no success. My computer is not in airplane mode and the wifi is turned on.

My computer is 2 years old and currently running windows 10

Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

Thank you.

Re: Thinkpad W540 Charging issue abroad

What is the wattage of the charger?

Re: Thinkpad W540 Charging issue abroad

If it is a genuine Lenovo battery and a genuine charge (not round tip with adapter), and the center pin isn't broken, I have no idea.  Charger type is read via the resistance between the signal (center) pin and ground.  You can test with a meter.  I think it is supposed to   be 15k ohms, but that is from memory).   It isn't related to input voltage.

Re: Thinkpad W540 Charging issue abroad

I will try to aquire something to test the charger.

The computer will also remain on if the charged is plugged in and the battery is removed; however, when either battery (the original and new) are placed back into the machine they will not charge.

I'm not sure if this provideds any further clues as to what could be going on but thank you for your help.

What is the charge level when it won't charge?

Re: Thinkpad W540 Charging issue abroad

It does not matter the level. Currently it is at about 30%.

Re: Thinkpad W540 Charging issue abroad

Hello,

Have you tried getting an AC power line cord with a EU connector at one end, instead of using the AC line cord you brought from the US with the adapter?  If so, did that make any difference?

Yes I tried that as well. Unfortunately, it makes no difference.

Re: Thinkpad W540 Charging issue abroad

I seemed to have fixed the problem.

I needed to go into the power settings and set the power plan to balanced. This was more of a software issue. I must have changed the power settings during travel.

Thank you all for your help
