Thunderbolt Controller on P50 dual 4k monitors

2016-10-04, 13:04 PM
I am trying to sovlve the problem of driving two 4 k monitors with my P50 W7 with a dock.

Nvidia states it is a Lenovo issue.

So I try the work around with a thunderbolt adpater.  I bought two.

1.
StarTech.com Thunderbolt 3 to Dual Monitor DisplayPort Adapter - Thunderbolt to 2x DP Converter - 4K 60Hz

The P50 will not recognize this.  I loaded the newest drivers and still no good. Does not recognize it.  I see that W10 has a brand new software release 9/26/16.   Where is the one for W7?

2.
TechOrbits USB 3.1 Type C (USB-C & Thunderbolt 3 Port Compatible) to DisplayPort 4K UHD USB-C to DisplayPort Adapter

This one worked after some scary video episodes.  I used it last night.  Now no good. Something failed?   My device manager does not show a 3.1 usb.

So when will Lenovo fix this so we can drive two external DisplayPorts? This is a real problem.

Does anyone have a workaround for W7?

Had the same problem. Internally, BOTH ports on the dock are hooked up to a single GPU port, so all monitors are effectively limited by a single DisplayPort 1.2 bandwidth.

You can run 4K monitors @ 30Hz though. Or get a Thunderbolt 3->DisplayPort adapter.

I had this problem.  Josh at Plugable helped me to resolve it.

Please look here:

P50 will NOT support Dual 4k monitors @ 60hz

This provides links to the Software AND Firmware update that actually work!

Lenovo was not much help resolving this.  Very, very time consuming.

After using these links, I was able to get my Plugable adapter to work.  Probably this will work for the other manufacturers (StarTech, TechOrbits).
