Thunderbolt Controller on P50

I have had the dreaded HDMI issue (monitor not recognized), which led me to updating the Thunderbolt firmware.

The Thunderbolt software is installed, I even removed and reinstalled. But the firmware won't install:

In device manager there is no Thunderbolt controller, even with "Show hidden devices" ON.

Do other P50 owners have a Thunderbolt controller in device manager?

Win Pro (in place upgrade from Home)

Re: Thunderbolt Controller on P50

The instructions for this patch are extremely obscure and poorly written.

You have to manually startup the ThunderBolt software first, and make sure it's shown in the system tray. The location of this software is given in the documentation for the patch.

Make sure you have the HDMI cable plugged in (not through the ThunderBolt port, but the actual HDMI port) and that your desktop is showing on the other screen.

This actually has to be active before the ThunderBolt patch can install properly.

Re: Thunderbolt Controller on P50

I have the external monitor, plugged in and working, via HDMI to DVI-D.

I started the software, and it shows this:

SijQYPw

the firmware updater shows the same thing as before.

thanks Maximus

PS: i have the BIOS set to "discrete graphics" only. but i had it before on hybrid and it didn't make a difference.

Re: Thunderbolt Controller on P50

The firmware updater read_me specifically instructs you to check for Thunderbolt Controller in device manager. I also have the USB host controller showing (though I have nothing thru the thunderbolt port, I have external USB disks plugged in).

Thanks

Re: Thunderbolt Controller on P50

Think Engineering has two suggestions for installing the firmware that can be performed after the system is connected to an external display:

  • Execute FW update tool (n1etf06w) as Administrator
  • Execute FW update tool directly from extracted folder
    • Open C:\DRIVERS\WIN\Thunderbolt_FW (FW update tools are extracted here by executing)
    • Execute “Setup.bat” as Administrator

It is important that the system be connected to an external display prior to installing the firmware. Please see this Service TIP for additional information: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/SF16-T0051

Thank you,

I have noticed that the Update on 7/14 doesn't require the system to be connected to an HDMI port, but just an external monitor. I was connected to an external monitor with mini-DP port, and it worked!

Re: Thunderbolt Controller on P50

Hello everyone,

For the new Thunderbolt update for #n1etf07w from July 14, is there any benefit to installing it even though I already installed the original Thunderbolt update #n1etf06w?

And we're back...

Move delayed but still coming
