Thunderbolt Ports -- Usable as Additional USB 3 Ports?

2019-12-05, 23:06 PM

The P1 Gen 2 (which I just purchased) has only 2 conventional USB (3.1) ports.  There are also, however, two "Thunderbolt" ports.  I've no idea what I might do with these as such, but I could use some more conventional USB ports.  Is there an adapter cable (or equivalent) to convert Thunderbolt to USB 3? -- JCW2

Yes. It is just a USB type c connector.

Rtheprince -- Thanks for the quick reply!  Are you saying that "Thunderbolt 3" and USB-C are identical or just that they use the same connector type?  Does one of these adapters work with all USB standards up to and including 3.1? -- JCW2

They are not the same, but Thunderbolt 3 ports support USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) speed over type c.

Some may support 20Gbps, but I'm not sure if the lenovos do.

To be clear, Thunderbolt 3 supports the slower USB spec but not the other way around.
