Thinkpad P51. My goal is to remove the HDD platter and replace it with a 2.5" SSD. I thought that the hard part was going to be not to break any of the plastic clips when removing the back cover : )
I watched this vid:
and also read about it in the HW manual.
It sure seems easy enough but this is the first time I am doing this. Prior experience was on older notebooks where the HDD just "slid" away from the system board. The video seems to imply that you can just lift the plastic tab of the sata connector and lift up and away from the system board. When I tried that I met with a lot of resistance and it felt like I was a second away from ripping the plastic tab right off of the connector. I tried to see if I could work a spudger somewhere in there to help lift it up but I could not find any way to do that. Suggestions and hand holding most welcome. Thank you.

The place you are lifting (first picture) is the cable, not the connector. you need to lift with a thinner tool farther back. The place you are lifting has fragile wires connected to the plug.
