Update CPU microcode in the BIOS 1.40 for Lenovo P50 fixes bugs in processors Skylake?

2017-06-28, 14:07 PM

Intel recently acknowledged the existence of serious problems in the Skylake processors and promised a new microcode for processors of this series.
Can we be sure that in your BIOS 1.40 from may 31, 2017 for Lenovo notebook P50 was added it is this firmware that resolves this serious problem:

At least in the changelog for version 1.40 BIOS says that was updated microcode. But was this microcode exactly designed to eliminate those same problems?

It seems it is.

I had some issues with VMware on my P50 and I thought it is related to recent bugs within VMware.  I updated BIOS to v1.40 now. If those issues do not happen again then it can confirm the issue was from bugs in Skylake CPU ( really?!).

Here are the bugs that I experienced:

  1. Sometimes if I try to re-add a nat network to a linked cloned VM. The VMware hangs and shows close windows. The solution was restarting the VMware Workstation.
  2. Sometimes if I pause and/or restart several VMs at the same time, I could have the same close issue. Normally just one VM is affected. if I run VMware UI again I can see other VMs are active.

At both cases, the best workaround is having a snapshot before applying any pause or change to VM. The bug does not corrupt the VM. It just turns off the VM that cause losing an active session.

Hopefully, BIOS 1.40 can solve the issue.

Re: Update CPU microcode in the BIOS 1.40 for Lenovo P50 fixes bugs in processors Skylake?

Alas, updating the microcode with BIOS 1.40 did not help my Lenovo P50 at all. Earlier in the forum, I already wrote that this laptop is completely inexplicably and unpredictably hardware hangs (not BSOD!). This can occur once a month, and can occur even every few days. As I wrote earlier, in this situation, the laptop before the hang does almost not work at all, there is no overheating, and also does not run any "heavy" software. The laptop hang "on level place".
I had a "hope" that all these problems were due to the same bug in the processors SkyLake / KabyLake, which should have been eliminated by the update of the microcode. Unfortunately, my hopes did not materialize. Less than a week, as my Lenovo P50 again rigidly hardware hung.
No words, how upset and angry I am!
Prove this situation as a marriage? It will not work, because it is absolutely impossible to reproduce this problem at will.
I'm getting more and more impression that the laptop P50 created by Lenovo extremely unsuccessful. Starting from extremely poor-quality plastic case and ending with bad hardware :-(
