Upgrade with SSD, recovery partition on old HDD

Hi, I would like to upgrade my W530 with SSD. What should I do to have working pre-boot recovery with recovery partition on present HDD as it is now while the system would be on new SSD? Is this possible? BTW I am considering between mSATA and 2.5" SSD for windows. Which should I choose? I must admit mSATA is more practical for me.

Thanks in advance!

If mSATA SSD is more practical for you, go for it.

Use Acronis True Image (or its equivalent) to clone "everything" on your present HDD onto the new SSD.

Re: Upgrade with SSD, recovery partition on old HDD

Kaso, thanks for reply. I am nearly of buying Intel 525 120GB SSD now but can you say something about recovery partition? I don't want to move it on SSD. I would like to have it as it is on HDD. What about pre-boot recovery? Will it work even if I copy recovery partition on SSD?

You can skip it when doing the cloning.

The presence of a valid recovery partition on the active drive (which is the new SSD, in your case) is required for in-place recovery to work. So, if that functionality is important to you, you should revisit the first question above.

If you haven't made your purchase, you should take a close look at the Crucial M4 128GB mSATA SSD. Just a suggestion.

I have very good offer for second hand Intel 525 120GB. What should I check before buy? The man bought it 3 weeks ago. Receipt is included.

Re: Upgrade with SSD, recovery partition on old HDD

I missed last occasion for the Intel and didn't have time for searching good deal. Now I can choose between Crucial M4 256GB and Plextor M5M 128GB. Both the same price, both are new but I won't get purchase confirmation for Crucial M4. For Plextor they give 5 years warranty. In Poland you are not obligated to RMA with receipt. Is it the same with Crucial RMA?
